Atari 7800 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

Service and user documentation for the Atari 7800 ProSystem. AtariAge members report that Atari never issued a field service manual for the 7800, so the schematic and the repair flowchart below are the main service documents.[1]

Schematic Diagram 7800 (C025231-001)

[edit | edit source]

Schematic Diagram 7800 is Atari, Inc.'s drawing C025231-001, revision A, a single E-size sheet dated 1984.[2] It shows the whole NTSC console:

  • the power input, the 4013 power latch (U10), the 2N3904 and MJE210 switch (Q9, Q10), the 7805 regulator (VR1) and the electrolytics C62, C61 and C22;
  • MARIA (U1), the 6502 (U2), the 2K × 8 RAMs (U5, U6) and the BIOS ROM (U7), with notes on fitting a 24-pin or 28-pin ROM through jumpers W1 and W2;
  • the TIA (U8), the 6532 (U9), the controller ports and the console switches;
  • the master oscillator (Y1, 14.31818 MHz), the video summing network, the sound-carrier oscillator (Q1) and the RF modulator connection;
  • the cartridge connector J1 and the J2 peripheral port with its pinout.

What it does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • A parts list or voltage ratings: capacitors are given by value only.
  • The PAL board (C300633-001) or the later C025233-002 timing circuit.
  • Test-point voltages.

7800 repair flowchart

[edit | edit source]

A six-sheet flowchart preserved with the 7800 development documents on the Internet Archive. Its author and date are not printed.[3]

  • Start: power button, +5 V on the chips, unregulated DC, the 5.1 V zener at U10 pin 14, U10 pins 3 and 13.
  • F: the 2N3904 (Q9), the MJE210 (emitter 9 V or more, collector toggling) and the regulator.
  • B: the diagnostic cartridge, the oscillator at MARIA pins 3 and 4, the clock at MARIA pin 8 and SALLY pin 39, and its distribution.
  • C: reset at SALLY pin 40, the 74LS32 and the 4013.
  • D: RDY (SALLY pin 2), HALT (pin 35) and IRQ (pin 4).
  • E: MARIA or TIA video lines, the encryption latch (74LS174 and 74LS32), CVIDEO at pin 3 of the RF can, the video gates and the summing resistors.

The last box of sheet E is a joke ("drop-kick board, then smash with large hammer").

Atari 7800 ProSystem owner's manual

[edit | edit source]

The owner's manual, Atari part number C024819-001 Rev. A, copyright 1986 Atari Corp., printed in Taiwan in 1987, has 12 PDF pages.[4] It covers the box contents, fitting the TV/game switch box, the channel switch, the console buttons, the Pro-Line controllers and the game-option menu, the difficulty switches for 2600 games, care of the console, and a set-up troubleshooting chart. It warns against using any other power adaptor or switch box.

Other 7800 documents

[edit | edit source]

The same Internet Archive collection holds GCC's Maria chip specification (GCC1702B, 1984), 7800 software guides and the 7800 Trak-Ball and keyboard schematics. They are not hosted here.[5] AtariAge members have shared a 7800 theory-of-operation archive and a parts list compiled by Mitch in the forum thread cited below.[1]
