Color StyleWriter 6500 Service Source
The Color StyleWriter 6500 volume of Apple's Service Source is Apple's 195-page field-service manual for the Color StyleWriter 6500, which Apple describes as "a high-performance four-color desktop color thermal ink-jet printer for personal use", printing up to 8 pages per minute in black and 4 in colour, with support for the Mac OS, Windows 95, Windows 3.1 and DOS.[1]
Contents

Notes from the manual
[edit | edit source]- After replacing the logic board, run the Color SW 6500 Default Settings utility from the Service Source Companion CD to put the printer back into "customer mode". Without it, the carriage does not centre when the access door is lifted, so cartridges cannot be changed. After replacing the logic board or the mechanical assembly, also run the X-Y Calibration utility. Both settings live in NVRAM on the logic board.[1]
- If a printer comes in for service and the customer has had it for a while, Apple says to replace the purge unit (922-2912), which contains the capping assembly.[1]
- Do not touch or remove the screws on the mechanical assembly for any reason: doing so puts the printer out of alignment and requires a new mechanical assembly.[1]
- The power supply board (922-2911) comes out after the paper tray, top cover and power supply EMI shield: disconnect its cable from CN3 and remove six screws. Refit the paper shielding behind the supply if it was removed.[1]
- Apple's cleaning information for the mechanism: water on a lint-free cloth for the carriage plate, drive rollers, print cartridge contacts and pivot assembly (dry carefully, since damp parts may rust; no solvents on the rollers); wipe the encoder strip left to right without pulling hard; clean the purge unit with a dry cotton swab, or a damp one for heavy deposits. Cleaning the carriage rod is not recommended; if it is very dirty, wipe it with a dry lint-free cloth only.[1]
| Printout | Resume presses |
|---|---|
| Sample page | Once |
| Diagnostic self test | 5 |
| Clean print heads | 7 (standard), 8 (deep cleaning), 9 (priming) |
| Extended diagnostic test | 12 |
NVM grid
[edit | edit source]The extended diagnostic test prints the printer's non-volatile memory as a hexadecimal grid of 20 columns by 13 rows, holding the page count, pen count, X-Y settings and last error trap. Apple supplied a decoder sheet to print on a transparency and lay over the grid (p. 188), and a hex converter utility on the Companion CD. In Apple's worked example the page count bytes 2e 04 00 00 convert to 46.[1]
| Data | Start in NVM grid |
|---|---|
| Page count | 98 (4 bytes) |
| Number of power-ups | 102 (2 bytes) |
| Number of power-on hours | 106 (4 bytes) |
| Factory X and Y alignment | 82 and 83 (1 byte each) |
| User X and Y alignment | 84 and 85 (1 byte each) |
| Paper jams | 252 (1 byte) |
| Carriage stalls | 253 (1 byte) |
