Panasonic JR-200 General Maintenance

From RetroTechCollection
Panasonic JR-200U

The Panasonic JR-200 has a mains power supply inside the case, a rubber keyboard joined to the main board by a flat lead, and a single main board with ten electrolytic capacitors. Panasonic's JR-200U service manual gives the disassembly order and a set of diagnostic programs, and the operating instructions give the owner's care rules.[1][2]

Safety

[edit | edit source]
  • The power switch, line filter and transformer primary carry mains voltage. Unplug the computer before opening it.[1]
  • The secondary fuse F1 is rated 1.0 A, 125 V on the JR-200U.[1]

Cleaning

[edit | edit source]

Panasonic's instructions are to wipe the case with a dry cloth and not to use volatile solvents such as paint thinner or benzene. Keep drinks away from the keyboard.[2]

Disassembly

[edit | edit source]
  1. Turn the JR-200U upside down.
  2. Remove the six screws from the lower case.
  3. Lift the upper case off the lower case while pressing the two points Panasonic marks. Do not damage the multi lead that joins the keyboard to the main board.
  4. Pull the power LED out of the upper case.
  5. Remove the two screws holding the speaker and take it out.
  6. Free the six spurs and lift the keyboard panel out of the upper case.
  7. Remove the nine screws holding shield case B and lift it off.
  8. To take out the power supply, unplug the lead from the transformer to the main board, then remove the four screws holding the transformer and the two holding the noise filter.

[1] Panasonic's disassembly instructions are partly smudged in the surviving scan; steps 3 to 6 follow the legible text and the figure.

Switches and settings

[edit | edit source]
  • The RF channel switch underneath selects channel 3 or 4; set it to a channel not used by a local station.[2]
  • The colour/monochrome switch underneath must be on "color" for a colour picture and on "monochrome" for a monochrome monitor.[2]
  • The transfer speed selection switch sets the cassette speed to 600 or 2400 baud, and is read when the computer is switched on.[2]

Diagnostic programs

[edit | edit source]

Panasonic's RAM test, ROM test and function test are printed in the service manual. The RAM and ROM tests name a failing chip by its IC number, and the function test runs through the printer, the colour bars, the keyboard, the joysticks, the speaker and the cassette interface.[1] The messages are listed on the Panasonic JR-200 Troubleshooting Guide.

Expansion port power

[edit | edit source]

Markku Reunanen reports that the +5 V pins of the expansion port (A19 and B19) cannot supply much current, and advises an external supply for add-ons.[3]

Checks while the case is open

[edit | edit source]
Inspection list
Check Detail
+5 V rail Measure at C37 (1000 µF) after the regulator IC34[1]
Electrolytic capacitors Ten positions; see the Panasonic JR-200 Capacitor Replacement Guide
Multi lead Seated at both ends, no cracked conductors; several of Panasonic's flowcharts end at it[1]
Fuse F1 and fuse resistor R13 Continuity[1]
