The Macintosh Performa 5400 is an all-in-one personal computer manufactured by Apple Computer, Inc. It is functionally identical to the Performa 5400CD, with the same 120 MHz PowerPC 603e processor and Alchemy logic board. Both model names refer to the same hardware configuration.
The Performa 5400 series was based on the Alchemy architecture and was the consumer version of the Power Macintosh 5400 educational line. It introduced 168-pin DIMM memory sockets and a PCI expansion slot to the LC line.[1]
Architecture and Processor
[edit | edit source]The Performa 5400 uses a PowerPC 603e processor running at 120 MHz on a 40 MHz system bus. The 603e is a 32-bit processor with a 64-bit data path and integrated floating-point unit.

Service documentation
[edit | edit source]Apple's own service manual is hosted here as Power Macintosh/Performa 5000 Series Service Source. Despite the "5000 Series" title it covers only the 5400 and 5500 — Apple's own Basics chapter is headed "Power Macintosh/Performa 5400 and 5500 Series". It gives the 5400/120 as a PowerPC 603e at 120 MHz and the international 5400/160 at 160 MHz, a 100–240 VAC supply at 47–63 Hz drawing 125 W, a 300 V RMS 100 ms surge rating, a 40 A peak inrush and 2.5 A maximum for all line and load conditions, and the PRAM cell threshold as replace below 3.0 V.[2]
Two things in that volume are unusual. Its Adjustments chapter includes a High Voltage adjustment — Apple rarely asks a technician to set an EHT level rather than replace a module — and Take Apart prints two different procedures for the power supply, the analogue board and the speakers, "Original Version" and "Rev. B". Identify the revision before ordering a part.[2]

Apple's chassis, electrical and environmental figures

Apple's own weight figure for this chassis is internally contradictory and should not be quoted. It prints "Without CD-ROM: 17 lb. With CD-ROM: 19 lb. (21.15 kg)" — 19 lb is 8.6 kg, not 21.15 kg, and 17/19 lb is what the LC 630 volume gives for a much smaller machine. The 21 kg / ~47 lb figure is the plausible one for a 15-inch all-in-one, and that is what this page carries, but it is flagged rather than presented as Apple's.
Apple's built-in display figures: dot pitch 0.28 mm, vertical frequency 66.7 Hz, active raster 9.5 × 7.3 in, white point 9,300 K.[3]
Apple publishes no rail tolerance and no power-supply adjustment for this machine. Its Adjustments chapter is Geometry and Video, with real trimmer designators — VR701 for horizontal size and centring, VR601, and on the CRT/video board VR301, VR302 (red gain), VR303 (green gain), VR304 (red bias) and VR305 (green bias).[3] There is no high-voltage adjustment here; that belongs to the 5200 and 5300.
