Amstrad DMP3000 Maintenance Guide

Amstrad DMP3000
An Amstrad DMP3000

The Amstrad DMP3000 shares its mechanism and main board with the Amstrad DMP2000, so the ribbon, self-test, mechanism and case procedures are on the Amstrad DMP2000 Maintenance Guide. The sections below cover what is specific to the DMP3000: its capacitors and fuses, its DIP switches, and the points where its user manual differs. Schneider's service manual for the Schneider DMP 3000 agrees with Amstrad's DMP2000/3000 parts list in most entries and gives the parts that Amstrad's list leaves out.[1][2]

Safety

[edit | edit source]

Warning: the printer contains mains voltage. Unplug it before opening the case.

Parts with Amstrad's safety prefix (the power switch, mains transformer, mains filter coil and the 250 V capacitors C31 to C34) must be replaced with parts of identical safety specification, and the safety tests repeated after any work.[2] The DMP3000 user manual asks for a 3 A fuse in a 13 A plug and a 220–240 V 50 Hz supply.[3]

Before first use and after transport

[edit | edit source]

The DMP3000 is packed with cardboard print head stabilisers, and its manual says not to switch on or run the printer with them in place, without the ribbon or without paper.[3] The ribbon is fitted in the same way as on the DMP2000: both ends into the two metal brackets at the rear, the upper ribbon under the grooved flap with the head lever raised, and the lower ribbon between the head and the small metal shield.[3]

Self test

[edit | edit source]

Switch off, hold down LF, switch on and release LF. The printer prints the ASCII set until the paper runs out or it is switched off. With paper loaded, a normal start gives no paper-out alarm and lights the ON LINE lamp.[3]

Capacitors

[edit | edit source]

Schneider's list (p. 10) gives every capacitor on the DMP3000 board; Amstrad's combined list omits C25 and misprints C28.[1][2] All the electrolytics are specified as 105 °C parts.

DMP3000 electrolytic capacitors (Schneider parts list p. 10)
Ref Value Schneider part no.
C25 4700 µF 30 V, 105 °C 103A1002-4722
C28 4700 µF 16 V, 105 °C 103A1002-4721
C26 47 µF 16 V, 105 °C 103A1001-4703
C4 1 µF 50 V, 105 °C 103A1001-0107

The other capacitors are 0.1 µF 50 V monolithic ceramics (C1 to C3, C5, C6, C9, C10, C14 to C21, C23), the 0.047 µF 250 V film capacitors C31 and C34, and the safety capacitors C32 and C33, whose value Schneider prints as 0,0022 µF in German and 0.022 in English; Amstrad gives 0.0022 µF 250 V.[1][2] Read the value marked on the fitted part before replacing C32 or C33. The Amstrad DMP2000 Maintenance Guide compares the two lists in full. See Capacitor Failure Symptoms.

Fuses and power parts

[edit | edit source]
DMP3000 power parts (Schneider pp. 10–11)
Ref Part
F1 T3.15 A 250 V fuse
F2 T315 mA 250 V fuse
BD1 S4VB10 bridge rectifier, 4 A 100 V
BD2 S2VB10 bridge rectifier, 2 A 100 V
IC18 L7805 regulator
D22, D23 27 V 1 W zener diodes (Amstrad's list gives D23 as the 27 V zener and includes D22 in the 1N4148 range)
R62, R63 100 Ω 2 W resistors
VR1 68 Ω semi-fixed resistor

Amstrad's wiring diagram prints the fuse on the mains filter board as "250V/150mA", where Schneider lists F2 as T315 mA. Check the rating printed on the fitted fuse and the board.[2][1] Neither manual gives a setting procedure for VR1.

DIP switches

[edit | edit source]

The switches are at the rear and should be changed only with the printer switched off. On the DMP3000, DS1-7 and DS1-8 select the default character set: both off for Epson FX standard, DS1-7 on for Epson FX NLQ, DS1-8 on for IBM set 1, and both on for IBM set 2. DS2-9 and DS2-10 are factory-set and should not be used.[3] Schneider's table marks DS2-9 and DS2-10 as having no function.[1] If a computer prints the wrong characters while the self test is correct, check DS1-1 to DS1-3 (international set) and DS1-7 and DS1-8 against the manual for the printer's own firmware.
