The Apple LaserWriter Select 360 is a 600 dpi, 10 page-per-minute laser printer that Apple introduced in October 1993, eight months after the Apple LaserWriter Select 300 and Apple LaserWriter Select 310.[1] It shares the case and the power supply of the two earlier models but has its own engine, the Fuji Xerox P1, with its own DC controller board and high-voltage power supply.[1][2] The I/O controller runs PostScript and HP PCL and switches between them automatically, and LocalTalk, serial and parallel connections can all be live at once.[3] Apple discontinued it on 22 April 1996.[4]

Apple's documents disagree on three figures. The Service Source and the 1995 service guide give the processor clock as 15 MHz and the weight as 26.4 lb (12 kg), the same weight they give for the 300 and 310; Apple's specification sheet gives 16 MHz and 29 lb.[1][3][4] The specification sheet names the languages as PostScript Level 2 and PCL 5.[4]

The built-in fonts come from the Avant Garde, Bookman, Courier, Helvetica, Helvetica Narrow, New Century Schoolbook, Palatino, Symbol, Times, Zapf Chancery and Zapf Dingbats families.[1]

Memory

[edit | edit source]

The standard 7 MB is 3 MB soldered to the I/O board plus a removable 4 MB SIMM. The only upgrade is to replace the 4 MB SIMM with a 16 MB one, which gives 16 MB in total because the controller disables the soldered 3 MB when a 16 MB SIMM is fitted. Apple's SIMM specification is 16 MB (4 Mbit × 32 bit), 72-pin, 80 ns or faster, with 2K refresh (11 × 11 bit).[3] The printer needs at least 7 MB: with less, the diagnostic reports a SIMM error.[5]

Fax card

[edit | edit source]

The optional PostScript fax card sends and receives faxes. It mounts on the I/O bracket with its battery facing up, plugs into J57 on the I/O board through its connector J1, and brings its telephone socket out through a port in the rear panel that is otherwise covered by a metal plate. The owner can switch the fax speaker on or off; Apple reserved the volume control for service providers, who set it to mid-range when fitting the card and were warned not to over-rotate the dial.[3][6]

Self test and diagnostic LEDs

[edit | edit source]

At switch-on all three LEDs light and then go out in turn: Ready/In Use when the I/O controller board passes, Paper-Out when the RAM passes, and Paper-Jam when the engine passes.[3] The 360 is the only Select with a diagnostic LED mode. Switch the printer off, remove the jumper from JMP1 on the I/O controller if one is fitted, set the rear-panel mode switch to 9 and switch on. The LEDs then repeat a cycle of one second all on, one second all off, one second showing the error, and one second all off.[5]

Select 360 diagnostic LED patterns[3][5]
Error Ready/In Use Paper-Out Paper-Jam
I/O controller board Off Off On
SIMM (including less than 7 MB fitted) Off On Off
Engine controller Off On On
Fuser On Off Off
Laser On Off On
Engine On On Off

Refit the JMP1 jumper and return the mode switch to its working position afterwards. The engine diagnostic is separate from the power-on self test and needs no loopback plug.[5]

Safety points specific to the 360

[edit | edit source]
  • The main motor stops when the paper cassette is removed.[7]
  • Do not run it for more than 10 minutes with the covers off, and keep the vents clear, or it may overheat.[7]

The rest of Apple's safety rules, the fuser cooling time and the test procedures are on the family pages listed below.

Maintenance and troubleshooting

[edit | edit source]

The 360's own entries in Apple's troubleshooting chapter are its two flowcharts and Table 6, Select 360 I/O Board Error.[8] The 1995 service guide repeats the 360 troubleshooting in its own chapter, pp. 116-160.[3]
