The Apple Multiple Scan 14 Display is a 14-inch shadow-mask colour monitor with a 12.4-inch viewable image, a built-in amplifier and stereo speakers, and a headphone jack.[1][2] It switches between 640 × 480, 800 × 600 and 832 × 624 from the Monitors control panel without a restart, and Apple's data sheet lists it for Power Macintosh, Macintosh LC, Quadra, Centris, Performa, Macintosh II and PowerBook computers.[2]

The monitor contains a CRT. Apple serviced it by returning the whole unit, and its Service Source has no internal procedures. Read CRT Discharge Procedure before opening one.

The 832 × 624 problem

[edit | edit source]

On some early units the picture shifts to the right at 832 × 624 and cannot be centred until the resolution is changed back to 640 × 480. Model M3935LL/A does not support 832 × 624 at all; it supports 640 × 480 and, on some computers, 800 × 600. In November 1995 Apple started an upgrade programme that replaced qualifying monitors with a Revision B display supporting 832 × 624.[3]

Apple's eligibility table:[3]

  • With the LC 475, Performa 475 and 476, Performa and Power Macintosh 6100, and Power Macintosh 7100, 7200, 7500, 8100, 8500 and 9500, a Rev. A display cannot centre the image and qualified for the upgrade; a Rev. B display works at 832 × 624.
  • With the Macintosh II series, LC, LC II, LC III, LC 520, LC 575, LC 580, LC 5200, Macintosh TV, the Performa 400 series (except the 475 and 476), the Performa 550, 560, 575, 577 and 578, the Performa 5200 series, PowerBooks, and PowerBook Duo 200 and 2300 models in a dock, neither revision can be upgraded usefully because the computer supports only 640 × 480.
  • For other computers, check the Monitors control panel; if 832 × 624 is offered but 800 × 600 cannot be reached even with Option held down while clicking Options, Apple considered the Rev. B display worthwhile.

Adjustments

[edit | edit source]

Brightness and contrast are the knobs to the right of the Apple logo. The vertical and horizontal shift and size knobs are behind the door with the Apple logo on it.[4] Apple published no internal adjustments, take-apart procedure, parts list or schematic for this display.[1]

Known faults

See Apple Multiple Scan 14 Display Troubleshooting Guide for Apple's symptom charts, which end at returning the monitor to Apple.
