The Apple Color StyleWriter 2400 is a colour bubble-jet printer that Apple introduced in September 1994.[1] It prints with QuickDraw from the Macintosh, has a 100-sheet cut sheet feeder and takes either a high-performance black cartridge or a four-colour cartridge whose black and colour ink tanks are replaced separately.[2] Apple's supplies data sheet lists its cartridges as also fitting the Canon BJC-4000 and BJC-4000e.[3]

The Apple Color StyleWriter 2500 of 1996 uses the same chassis and the same cartridges. The 2400 has an internal power supply and fuse; the 2500 runs from an external adapter.[2][4]

The user's guide gives the marking engine as a thermal ink jet, 360 dpi for text and graphics and 180 dpi in draft, and an interface of high-speed serial (RS-422) with optional LocalTalk, using the Apple System/Peripheral-8 cable. It requires a Macintosh with a 68020 or later processor (not a Macintosh Plus, SE, Classic, Portable or PowerBook 100), System 7.0 or later and at least 4 MB of RAM.[5] The printer switches itself off after it has been idle for about five minutes and on again when it receives a job.[5]

Cartridges

[edit | edit source]
Finished-goods part numbers[2][3]
Item Part number
High-performance black ink cartridge M3240G/A
Four-colour ink cartridge (print head, colour tank and black tank) M3328G/A
Colour (cyan, magenta, yellow) ink tank M3329G/A
Black ink tank M3330G/A

The supplies data sheet gives different yields from the Service Source: up to 2,000 pages from the four-colour cartridge's print head, 150 pages from each tank and 900 pages from the black cartridge, all at 5 % coverage.[3]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

Apple serviced the printer at module level.[2]

Parts in the exploded view (Service Source, p. 158)[2]
Part Apple part number
Logic board; logic board cover 661-0161; 922-1167
Power supply (2400 only) 661-0162 (110 V); 661-0163 (220 V)
Fuse 922-0180 (125 V); 922-0181 (250 V)
Carriage unit; carriage belt; carriage cable 922-1145; 922-1146; 922-1147
Carriage motor; paper feed motor 922-1148; 922-1149
Purge unit 922-1143
Ink absorbers (kit) 076-0470
Eject roller; roller and spring kit 922-1150; 076-0471

Output tray; extension 922-1139; 922-1138
Bottom case with feet 922-1144

The power supply connects to the logic board at connector CNV; the logic board also carries CNCR, CNH and CNLF. The amount of ink absorbed by the waste ink absorbers is stored in an EEPROM on the logic board.[2] The exploded view gives no current rating for the fuse, and the Service Source has no schematic, no component list and no output voltages for the supply.[2]

Networking

[edit | edit source]

An optional LocalTalk module plugs into the serial port behind an interface cover on the rear case.[2] Two versions exist: the earlier one works only with the 2400, the later one is labelled for both the 2400 and the 2500.[4] Without the module, the ColorShare software installed with the driver lets the printer be shared with other users on an AppleTalk network (LocalTalk, EtherTalk or TokenTalk).[5]
