The Apple Monochrome Monitor (A2M6016) is a 12-inch white-phosphor composite monitor that Apple sold for the Apple IIGS, Apple IIc and Apple IIc Plus. Its platinum case matches the IIGS. Its owner's guide carries a 1986 copyright.[1][2] Apple's 1988 data sheet sold it alongside the Apple Monochrome Monitor IIe (A2M6017), a green-screen model for the Apple II, II Plus and IIe that is the platinum version of the Apple Monitor II.[2] The two are different designs: the IIe model has the Monitor II's tilting screen and a green P31 tube, the Apple Monochrome Monitor a white P4 tube in a different case.

The monitor contains a CRT. Read CRT Discharge Procedure before opening it.

Apple's Tech Info Library repeats these figures but gives the bandwidth of both monitors as 10 MHz and the operating range of this one as "0 to 5 degrees C", a misprint for 0 to 50 °C.[3] Apple's service manual labels the rear controls H-HOLD, HEIGHT and V-HOLD.[4] The 220/240 V version has a detachable mains lead plugged into a power inlet on the left of the back panel.[1]

A Height-Adjustment bar under the front of the case can be turned round and refitted to raise the front of the monitor by one inch.[1] For the IIc and IIc Plus, Apple also sold the Apple Monitor Stand (A2M4029).[2]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

Inside are the CRT on its mounting plate, a main logic board assembly that slides into channels on the CRT mounting plate and carries the flyback transformer, a separate mains transformer screwed to the same chassis, the CRT socket board on the tube neck, a switch case holding the power switch and contrast control, and an LED board behind the bezel.[5]

Apple's service parts were the CRT (076-0224), the fuse (740-0308), the main logic board (661-0346 for 110 V, 661-0362 for 220/240 V), the transformer (915-0009 for 110 V, 915-0010 for 220 V, 915-0011 for 240 V), the on/off switch (937-0018), the contrast control (905-0002), the LED assembly (930-0005) and the cases.[6] Apple does not print the fuse's rating.

Apple presets the yoke at the factory and tells technicians not to make tilt, ring or geometric adjustments. The only internal controls are sub-brightness, horizontal hold and focus.[7]

Known faults

[edit | edit source]

Apple's symptom chart replaces the main logic board for most faults. A blown fuse that blows again points to the mains transformer. Two faults are self-inflicted: an image reversed left to right after service means yoke connector P4 is on backwards, and an upside-down image means P3 is.[8] See Apple Monochrome Monitor Troubleshooting Guide.

Apple's service documents give no schematic or component list for this monitor.
