The Apple Performa Display is a 14-inch colour monitor with a fixed 640 × 480 resolution and a 0.39 mm dot pitch, sold for the Macintosh Performa range from September 1992 to July 1994.[1] Apple treated it as a whole-unit exchange: there are no service parts, adjustments or take-apart procedures, and almost every cure in Apple's symptom charts is "Replace monitor".[1][2] Its sibling, the Apple Performa Plus Display, has the same specification in Apple's Service Source but a finer 0.29 mm dot pitch.[1] EveryMac lists the Performa Display as introduced with the Performa 400 at US$305.[3]

Controls

[edit | edit source]

Apple's locator drawing shows vertical shift, horizontal shift, brightness, contrast and the on/off switch under the front of the screen, and H.WIDTH and V.HEIGHT controls at the rear beside the power cord.[1]

Troubleshooting

[edit | edit source]

Apple's charts start from the surroundings: a distorted raster or a jittering, flashing picture is first checked by moving the display away from electrical equipment and switching off fluorescent lights. Beyond that the display was exchanged as a unit.[2]

Apple's symptom charts, Performa Display and Performa Plus Display[2]
Symptom Apple's cure Service Source page
Raster too short, tall, narrow or wide; raster not centred; no raster Replace monitor. Troubleshooting 3
Abnormal or distorted raster 1. Move the display away from electrical equipment and switch off fluorescent lights. 2. Adjust brightness and contrast. 3. Replace monitor. 3
Picture breaks into diagonal lines; picture rolls; a single vertical or horizontal line on a black raster Replace monitor. 4
Predominant colour tint; picture too dark or too bright; brightness or contrast cannot be adjusted Replace monitor. 5
Out of focus; out of convergence; black spots on the screen (burnt phosphor) Replace monitor. 6
Picture jitters or flashes 1. Move the display away from electrical equipment and switch off fluorescent lights. 2. Check that all ground cables are secure. 3. Replace monitor. 6

Apple's 1996 service guide repeats the same chart.[1] Apple's Service Source for the display has no take-apart, adjustment or exploded-view chapter and no component values.[2] Anyone opening the case needs to discharge the CRT first; see CRT Discharge Procedure and Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
