Atari Jaguar CD Capacitor Replacement Guide

From RetroTechCollection
Jaguar CD main board 700037 Rev. E. C39, C35 and C36 are below the two LM2941T regulators on the left; C59 and C58 are beside the Atari ASIC on the right

The Atari Jaguar CD main board (assembly 700037) carries about sixteen aluminium electrolytic capacitors. The values below come from ZedLabz's capacitor kit list, a vendor source, and not from Atari documentation. The positions were checked against the designators printed on the board in Evan-Amos's photograph of a Rev. E board.[1][2] For the console, see the Atari Jaguar Capacitor Replacement Guide.

Capacitor list

Jaguar CD electrolytics (ZedLabz kit list)
Ref Value Rating On the Rev. E board photograph
C8 47 µF 25 V Beside R15 and R16, between the two TDA7073AT chips
C10 22 µF 25 V Below the lower TDA7073AT
C12 22 µF 16 V Below the TDA1302T, near the six-wire transport plug
C21 22 µF 25 V See note below
C23 33 µF 10 V Left edge, below the TDA1301T
C24 33 µF 10 V Top left, above the TDA1301T
C35 47 µF 10 V Below the LM2941T regulators
C36 47 µF 10 V Below the LM2941T regulators
C39 47 µF 25 V Below the LM2941T regulators
C42 1 µF 50 V Top left, beside C24
C47 1 µF 50 V Top right, beside the SAA7345GP
C48 4.7 µF 50 V Near the SAA7345GP
C54 4.7 µF 50 V Near the SAA7345GP
C58 1 µF 50 V Beside the Atari 500490 ASIC
C59 47 µF 10 V Beside the Atari 500490 ASIC
C73 10 µF 25 V Bottom right, beside the power socket

Values and ratings are ZedLabz's.[1] The positions are from the silkscreen in the photograph.[2] On that board the largest capacitor beside the TDA1302T is marked C22, a designator the kit list does not contain; the list instead has a C21 of 22 µF 25 V. Read the markings on your own board before ordering.

Procedure

[edit | edit source]

See Recommended Tools for equipment and Capacitor Failure Symptoms for what a failed part looks like.

  1. Remove the CD unit from the console and unplug its adaptor.
  2. Remove the seven case screws from the underside and lift off the top cover, keeping the lid-sensor post.[3]
  3. Remove the four board screws, unplug the lid switch lead and lift the board out.[4]
  4. Most capacitors can be reached with the transport in place. If you take it out, note its wiring first; see Atari Jaguar CD Laser Replacement.
  5. Replace one capacitor at a time, matching the polarity marking on the board.
  6. Refit the board and the cover, guiding the lid-sensor post into its hole.[5]

Graeme Hinchliffe notes that a capacitor beside the six-wire transport socket makes the plug awkward to refit; start the end nearest the capacitor first.[5]
