Front-panel adjustments, the EEPROM backup and take-apart notes for the Apple Multiple Scan 17 Display, from Apple's Service Source.[1] Apple gives no anode voltage for this display. Read CRT Discharge Procedure before opening it.

Front-panel adjustments

[edit | edit source]

Every adjustment is made from the front panel. Press the select button repeatedly to choose a setting by its indicator light, then use the brightness (up and down) and contrast (left and right) buttons. Use a crosshatch pattern for geometry and convergence.[2]

Front-panel settings (Service Source, Adjustments pp. 2-17)
Indicator Brightness buttons Contrast buttons
None selected Brightness up and down Contrast down (left) and up (right)
Centring Picture up or down Picture left or right
Size Height Width
Rotation Tilt clockwise (up) or anticlockwise (down) Shape: sides in (left) or out (right)
Convergence Vertical: red up and blue down, or the reverse Horizontal: red left and blue right, or the reverse
Colour temperature Lower or higher: 9300 K (default, steady light), 6500 K (slow blink), 5000 K (fast blink)

The monitor keeps the user's settings at every power-on. To recall factory levels, push the reset button with a straightened paperclip: with brightness and contrast (both together), with a single selected setting (centring, convergence or colour temperature), or, holding the control button at the same time, all settings at once.[3]

Saving the EEPROM

[edit | edit source]

Do this before replacing the microprocessor board.[4]

  1. Connect a mini-DIN-8 serial cable from the display to the modem or printer port of a Macintosh running MacTest Pro. Either use a separate host computer (the display under repair needs only power), or run the display as the host's own screen.
  2. In MacTest Pro choose Apple Multiple Scan 17 Display, Test, Create File.
  3. Fit the new microprocessor board. Its default settings leave the display readable, but only just.
  4. In MacTest Pro choose Test, Write File.
  5. Write the file only to the display it came from, delete it afterwards, and use the version of Display Setting Restore Utility that matches the Service Source CD.

If the EEPROM data is lost or corrupted before it is written to the new board, Apple's answer is to return the display for repair.[4]

Take-apart notes

[edit | edit source]
  • Stand: with the monitor face down on a pad, swivel the base to reach the single mounting screw, remove it and lift the stand out. When refitting the tilt and swivel platforms, line up the etched arrows with the front of the base.[5]
  • CRT/video board: pull it straight off the tube neck. Twisting, bending or forcing it can crack the neck.[6]
  • Access to the boards is through the stand, the rear cover and the EMI shield, in that order, with the CRT discharged; Apple's Take Apart chapter covers each module.[7]

Capacitors

[edit | edit source]

Apple's service documents give no component-level information. General failure signs are on Capacitor Failure Symptoms.
