This article covers general maintenance procedures for the Atari Mega STE computer. The Mega STE shares some characteristics with the Atari Mega ST and the Atari 1040STE, but its TT-style case, Phihong PSU, and 16 MHz circuitry introduce distinct maintenance considerations.

Safety precautions

  • Disconnect mains power before opening the case or performing any internal work.
  • The Phihong PSM-5341 power supply contains lethal voltages even when disconnected. Allow at least 24 hours for capacitors to discharge before working on PSU internals.
  • Use an anti-static wrist strap when handling the motherboard or ICs.
  • Work on a clean, well-lit, non-conductive surface.

Opening the case

The Mega STE uses the Atari TT030 case design. The top cover slides forward for removal:

  1. Disconnect all cables (power, monitor, keyboard, peripherals).
  2. Locate the two locking tabs (or screws, depending on revision) at the rear of the case.
  3. Release the tabs and slide the top cover forward until it clears the base.
  4. The motherboard, PSU, floppy drive, and hard disk (if fitted) are all mounted in the base unit.
  5. Take care around the PSU โ€” it sits at the rear left. Components near the PSU can be knocked during cover removal.[1]

Cleaning

External cleaning

  • Clean the grey ABS plastic case with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
  • The Mega STE's grey plastic is less prone to yellowing than the beige/cream plastics of earlier ST models, but UV damage can still occur over decades.
  • Retrobright treatment can be applied if yellowing is present, though it is rarely needed on grey-cased units.

Internal cleaning

  • Use compressed air to remove dust from the motherboard, PSU area, and drive bays.
  • Clean the floppy drive heads with isopropyl alcohol (IPA, 99%+) applied to a lint-free swab.[2]
  • Clean IC socket contacts with DeoxIT or IPA.
  • If an internal SCSI hard disk is fitted, inspect its ribbon cable for damage or oxidation on the IDC connectors.

NVRAM battery replacement

The Mega STE uses a Dallas DS1216 SmartWatch or similar battery-backed NVRAM device (depending on board revision) for storing system configuration data including CPU speed, cache setting, and time/date. Some revisions use a socketed CR2032 battery.

To replace:

  1. Open the case and locate the NVRAM device or battery holder on the motherboard.
  2. For socketed batteries: remove old battery, clean holder with IPA, insert new CR2032 with correct polarity.
  3. For Dallas SmartWatch: these contain an internal battery that cannot be replaced without desoldering. Replace the entire module, or install a replacement battery modification (documented on various Atari forums).
  4. After replacement, reconfigure CPU speed and cache settings via the GENERAL.CPX control panel, as these values are stored in NVRAM.

Floppy drive maintenance

The internal 3.5-inch floppy drive should receive periodic maintenance:

  • Head cleaning โ€” Clean with IPA and lint-free swab every 6โ€“12 months.
  • Drive belt inspection โ€” Inspect for wear; replace if stretched or cracked.
  • HD floppy compatibility โ€” Later Mega STE units shipped with 1.44 MB HD drives. If replacing the drive, ensure the replacement supports the correct density. The floppy controller clock is 8 MHz regardless of CPU speed setting.
  • Replacement drives โ€” Compatible drives include the Epson SMD-340, Chinon FZ-354, and Sony MPF920. The MPF920 requires the addition of pull-up resistors on the WD1772 output lines.[2]

SCSI hard disk maintenance

If the Mega STE includes an internal SCSI hard disk:

  • Listen for abnormal sounds โ€” Clicking, grinding, or excessive spin-up time indicates imminent drive failure.
  • Modern replacements โ€” The original SCSI hard disk (typically Seagate ST-157N) can be replaced with a SCSI2SD adapter, which emulates a SCSI hard disk using a modern SD card. This eliminates mechanical failure concerns and provides near-silent operation.
  • ACSI alternatives โ€” External ACSI devices (such as the UltraSatan SD card reader) connect to the rear ACSI DMA port and serve as reliable mass storage replacements.
  • Hard disk driver โ€” Ensure the boot driver (AHDI, HDDriver, or CBHD) is current. HDDriver by Uwe Seimet is recommended for broadest device compatibility.

Keyboard maintenance

The Mega STE keyboard is a TT-style detachable unit with membrane keyswitches:

  • Membrane repair โ€” Individual key failures are typically caused by broken traces on the membrane sheet. These can be repaired with conductive pen (silver or carbon ink).[3]
  • Cable inspection โ€” Check the coiled keyboard cable and connectors for damage.
  • Keycap cleaning โ€” Remove keycaps carefully, soak in warm soapy water, dry thoroughly.

Power supply maintenance

General PSU checks:

  • Visual inspection โ€” Look for bulging, leaking, or discoloured capacitors.
  • Voltage verification โ€” Check all output rails with the system running:
    • +5V: 4.95โ€“5.10V (nominal 5.00V)
    • +12V: 11.8โ€“12.2V
    • -12V: -11.8 to -12.2V
    • -5V: -4.90 to -5.10V
  • Re-solder any suspicious joints, particularly around heat-generating components.

VME slot maintenance

If a VME card is installed:

  • Reseat the card periodically to maintain good contact.
  • Clean edge connectors with DeoxIT.
  • Inspect for bent pins or damaged traces on the VME backplane connector.
