The Atari 1040STF is the ST with 1 MB of RAM, an internal double-sided floppy drive and an internal power supply. Atari's service manual explains the name: "The 1040ST has a built in 1 Megabyte floppy disk drive, hence the full designation is 1040STF (floppy)."[1] It has no television modulator, so it needs a monitor: an SM124 for the monochrome mode or an SC1224 for colour. The version with a modulator is the Atari 1040STFM, and the features the two share are described at Atari 1040ST.

It was first shown at the Winter CES on 9 January 1986 and went on sale on 1 March 1986, alongside the 512 KB 520STF.[2] Production ended in 1989, when the STE arrived.[2] The German Atari museum describes it as the first computer sold with 1 MB of RAM as standard.[2]

In March 1986 the 1040STF cost US$999 with the monochrome SM124 and US$1,199 with the colour SC1224; both prices fell by US$100 in January 1987.[2]

Memory

[edit | edit source]

RAM is 256 kbit × 1 DRAM. The 520 has one bank of 16 chips; the 1040 adds a second bank of 16, 32 in total. Atari's memory map gives 000800–07FFFF for the low bank and 080000–0FFFFF for the high bank.[1] The memory controller is programmed at power-up with the amount of RAM found, and Atari's hardware specification describes the per-bank sizing test the operating system uses for this.[3] A 1040STF that reports 512 KB therefore points at the second bank.

TOS is in six 32K × 8 ROMs, paired high and low at FC0000, FD0000 and FE0000. Some early 520STs had two 8K × 8 boot ROMs instead and loaded TOS from floppy.[1] The museum gives the ROM date of TOS 1.00 as 6 February 1986, before the 1040STF went on sale.[2]

Power supply

[edit | edit source]

The internal switching supply provides +5 V and +12 V and nothing else: there is no −12 V output.[1] It is rated at 3 A at +5 V and 0.9 A at +12 V, with 33.5 W maximum input. It has a 2 A fuse and one adjustment, preset RV301 on Atari (Japan)'s drawing of the supply, which sets both rails together; Atari's instruction is to set the output within ±5 %, 4.75–5.25 V. Typical load is 2.2 A at +5 V and 160 mA at +12 V, rising to 2.3 A and 340 mA during disk access.[1] Atari adds that the supply has overcurrent protection, so a blown fuse usually means a catastrophic failure such as a shorted primary.[1]

The supply is mains-powered and its primary side holds a charge after it is unplugged. Discharge the primary reservoir before working on it.

Board revisions

[edit | edit source]

The German Atari museum lists three main-board part numbers for the 1040STF, in production order. The 520STF uses the same boards with half the RAM fitted.[2]

  • C070523: early production
  • C070789: also used in the STFM models
  • C103088: later production

Opening the case

[edit | edit source]

Atari's disassembly sequence starts with seven screws in the square holes on the underside, which hold the top case to the bottom. If the board or the drive is to come out, also remove the three screws in the round holes, which hold the disk drive. The keyboard harness plugs in at the right front corner. The power supply can stay in place while the upper shield is lifted off for troubleshooting.[1]
