The IBM IntelliStation is IBM's workstation line, first released in March 1997 as the follow-on to the IBM PC Series 360 and 365. Some IntelliStation M Pro models were close to identical in hardware to the low-end IBM Netfinity 1000 servers. In February 2002 IBM moved its POWER-based workstations, previously sold under the eServer pSeries brand, into the IntelliStation line. The Intel and AMD models were discontinued in March 2008, and the last models, the POWER 185 and POWER 285, were withdrawn in January 2009.[1]
Model lines
[edit | edit source]IBM sold the x86 machines as the E Pro (entry), M Pro (midrange), Z Pro (high-end dual-processor), A Pro (AMD Opteron) and R Pro (1U rack-mount), and the POWER machines as the IntelliStation POWER 185, 265, 275 and 285.[1] Every machine is identified by its four-digit machine type (MT) on the rear label, and IBM's service documents are indexed by it.

Service information
[edit | edit source]The IntelliStation hardware maintenance manuals are FRU-level: they give part numbers, symptom-to-FRU tables, POST and beep codes and removal procedures, not component values or schematics.[11] IBM's September 1998 manual for the PC 300, PC 700 and IntelliStation types 6865, 6888, 6889, 6893, 6898 and 6899 is hosted here. For later types, IBM's support site has per-type overview, specification and troubleshooting pages.
Things IBM documents that save time on the bench:
- Types 6865, 6889 and 6893 (and the later 6849) boot "quiet" by default when POST finds no error: no beep and no memory count. Turn on Power-on Status (or set POST to Enhanced on the 6849) in Setup to hear the beep.[13][14]
- The CMOS backup battery on the 6893 and 6899 is a lithium cell, FRU 33F8354. POST errors 161 (bad CMOS battery), 162 (configuration mismatch) and 163 (clock not updating) all list it as a FRU.[11][13]
- ECA036 (6893) and ECA037 (6889 and 6897) are firmware updates for IBM 9.1 GB and 18.2 GB 7200 rpm SCSI drives (option 20L0553, FRU 36L8648; option 20L0554, FRU 36L8649). Without the update, after the system is powered down the drive may not spin up again on an Adaptec controller, or may fail completely on a ServeRAID or Netfinity Fibre Channel controller.[15][16]
- The Z Pro 6221 system board is MSI's MS-9121. A badcaps.net member who compared the two found that IBM's version has Sanyo OS-CON polymer capacitors where MSI used other polymers, and Rubycon electrolytics at the processor voltage regulator where MSI's board had Nichicon.[17]
