IBM IntelliStation Maintenance Guide

From RetroTechCollection
IBM IntelliStation M Pro Type 6219.

Preventive maintenance on an IBM IntelliStation depends on the machine type (MT) printed on the rear label, because IBM documented each type separately. IBM's hardware maintenance manuals (HMMs) for the line are FRU-level: they give part numbers, removal steps, symptom-to-FRU tables and POST codes, but no schematics or component values.[1]

Safety

[edit | edit source]

The power supply runs from the mains and its primary capacitors can hold a charge after the machine is unplugged. Unplug the power cord before removing the cover. Discharge the primary capacitors and confirm with a meter before working inside a supply.

IBM's own safety checks for these machines, from the HMM's safety inspection guide, are to check the power cord and its insulation, remove the cover, and look for non-IBM alterations, metal filings, liquid, smoke or fire damage, and worn, frayed or pinched cables. IBM also warns not to service a power supply, fan or blower with power on once it has been removed from its normal place in the machine.[2] Use an anti-static strap: the HMM's ESD handling rules apply to every board and drive.[2]

Identifying the machine and its documents

[edit | edit source]

Read the machine type from the rear label, for example "Type 6219". The model tables on IBM IntelliStation give the processor, memory and drive generation for each type. Documents available:

  • Types 6865, 6888, 6889, 6893, 6898 and 6899: the September 1998 HMM hosted here, with parts lists, specifications, removal procedures and POST codes.[1]
  • Z Pro 6221: IBM's 2004 Installation Guide, hosted here, with POST codes, troubleshooting charts and the system board error LEDs.[3]
  • POWER 185 and POWER 285: IBM's Redpapers REDP-4135 and REDP-4078, hosted here, which give specifications and configuration rules but are not service manuals.[4][5]
  • Other types: IBM's support site has overview, specification and troubleshooting pages indexed by machine type.

Power supply checks

[edit | edit source]

The IntelliStation models in the 1998 HMM take power through a 20-pin connector on the system board. IBM says to measure with the power supply cables connected to the board.[6]

20-pin main power connector (IBM HMM p. 30)
Pin Signal Pin Signal
1 +3.3 V 11 +3.3 V
2 +3.3 V 12 −12 V
3 Ground 13 Ground
4 +5 V 14 PS-ON (DC remote enable)
5 Ground 15 Ground
6 +5 V 16 Ground
7 Ground 17 Ground
8 POK (Power Good) 18 −5 V
9 5VSB (standby) 19 +5 V
10 +12 V 20 +5 V

IBM's check for a dead machine is: confirm the voltage-selector switch setting; reseat the power cord, the on/off switch connectors, the system board power connectors and the processors; check the power cord and power switch for continuity; then measure the voltages and replace the supply if they are wrong.[6] The HMM gives no tolerance figures for the 20-pin supplies. The ATX specification's limits, which these supplies are built to meet, are:[7]

ATX output limits
Rail Tolerance Range (V) Ripple p-p max (mV)
+3.3 V ±5 % +3.135 to +3.465 50
+5 V ±5 % +4.75 to +5.25 50
+12 V ±5 % +11.40 to +12.60 120
−5 V ±10 % −4.50 to −5.50 50
−12 V ±10 % −10.80 to −13.20 120
+5 V standby ±5 % +4.75 to +5.25 50

IBM's supply ratings for each type are tabulated on the main page. Later types (6223, 6217, 9228) use supplies of 530 W and above with power factor correction.

Opening the case

[edit | edit source]

Follow the removal procedure for the machine type. On the M Pro 6889, for example, IBM says to unlock the cover from the back of the system unit before removing the side cover, not to lift the top handle cover too high or its tabs will break, and to take the SCSI signal cable off the air baffle before removing the baffle. The baffle must go back in: it directs air over the processors.[8]

Cleaning

[edit | edit source]
  • Remove dust from the fans, heatsinks, air baffles and power supply vents with a soft brush and low-pressure air, holding fan blades still.
  • Put every air baffle back before powering up.[8]
  • Clean adapter edge connectors that show corrosion with isopropyl alcohol and reseat the card.

CMOS battery

[edit | edit source]

IBM lists the CMOS backup battery on the 1998 HMM types as a lithium cell, FRU 33F8354, and the Z Pro 6221 Installation Guide gives the same part number for its lithium battery.[1][3] POST errors 161 (bad CMOS battery), 162 (configuration mismatch) and 163 (clock not updating or invalid time) list the battery among their FRUs.[9] After replacing it, run Setup to restore the date, time and configuration. Dispose of the old lithium cell as local regulations require.[3] See Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage for leakage.

SCSI drive firmware

[edit | edit source]

IBM 9.1 GB and 18.2 GB 7200 rpm SCSI drives (option 20L0553, FRU 36L8648; option 20L0554, FRU 36L8649) in the M Pro 6889 and 6897 and the E Pro 6893 need the firmware update from ECA037 or ECA036. Without it, the drive may not spin up again after the system is powered down on an Adaptec controller, or may fail completely on a ServeRAID or Netfinity Fibre Channel controller.[10][11]

See Hard Drive Maintenance and Repair for general drive work.

Capacitors

[edit | edit source]

IBM published no capacitor values for any IntelliStation board or supply. Inspect the electrolytics around the processor voltage regulators and in the supply, and see IBM IntelliStation Capacitor Replacement Guide.

BIOS recovery

[edit | edit source]

If a BIOS update is interrupted, the 1998 HMM types recover with the boot block jumper or switch: power off, move it to the recover position, insert the update diskette, power on and follow the Flash Update Utility, then return the jumper to normal. POST error 166 (boot block checksum error) points to the same procedure.[12]

[edit | edit source]
  • Anti-static strap and mat.
  • Multimeter for the supply checks above.
  • Soft brush, low-pressure air, isopropyl alcohol.
  • A spare lithium cell of the type fitted (IBM 33F8354 on the documented types).
  • The HMM or installation guide for the machine type.
