Psion
British Pocket Computers, Organisers and Palmtops from the Original 1984 Organiser to the netBook

Welcome to the Psion category! Psion was a British maker of handheld computers. Its line runs from the Organiser of 1984 and the Organiser II, through the Series 3 and Series 5 clamshell palmtops and the Revo, to the Series 7, netBook and netBook Pro sub-notebooks and the Workabout industrial handhelds. This category collects the machine pages, the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair guides, and Psion's own manuals as hosted PDFs.

Each system features:

  • A machine page with specifications, hardware details and the documentation that survives
  • General maintenance and troubleshooting guides, using Psion's own fault tables and reset procedures where they exist
  • Repair guides for the known weak points: Series 3 and 5mx hinges, the Series 5 screen cable, and the Revo and netBook batteries
  • Psion's user guides, service manuals and parts lists, hosted as PDFs

No capacitor guides are listed for the Series 3 family. The fault table in Psion's Psion Series 3a Service Manual lists no capacitor faults, and the faults the comp.sys.psion FAQ describes are mechanical and connection faults: the hinges, the button bar and screen ribbons, the battery lead and the SSD door switches. No hinge guide has been written for the Siena.

The Psion Series 5mx Capacitor Replacement Guide records that Psion published no component values for the 5mx and describes the inspection and current checks that apply; no capacitor guide is listed for the other EPOC machines. The 5mx Pro uses the 5mx case and hinge, so it shares the 5mx hinge guide. The Revo's main repair is its two soldered-in NiMH cells, so the last column links the battery guide for the Revo and Revo Plus.

Series 7 / netBook (1999-2003)

No capacitor guides are listed for the Series 7, netBook or netBook Pro. The hardware faults recorded in the Series 7 FAQ and on PsionWiki are the screen cable, the battery-catch microswitch, the CompactFlash drawer and PC Card current; on the netBook Pro, owners report broken hinges. See Capacitors in the Series 7 troubleshooting guide. The Series 7 and netBook share a battery pack, so the rebuild procedure is on Psion netBook Battery Service; the netBook Pro has its own page. No Psion service manual, spare parts list or exploded diagram is known to survive for these three machines; their user guides, datasheets and Psion Teklogix's netBook FAQ are listed below.

Software

  • PsionLX – Psion Teklogix's unreleased Linux for the netBook Pro (2004-2005): what the beta contained, every surviving file and where it came from, and the RetroTechCollection reconstruction that boots from CompactFlash.
