The IBM 5153, which IBM called the IBM Color Display, is the RGBI colour monitor IBM made for the Color/Graphics Monitor Adapter (CGA). IBM announced it on 4 February 1983 in announcement letter 183-002, with planned availability in March 1983.[1] CGA software was written for the colours a 5153 produces.
Display characteristics
[edit | edit source]IBM's figures:[2]
| Item | IBM figure |
|---|---|
| CRT | 340 mm (13 in), high-contrast (black) screen |
| Colours | Up to 16 with the Color/Graphics Monitor Adapter; red, green, blue and intensity are independent signals |
| Text | 80 characters by 25 rows; characters in an 8 PEL high by 8 PEL wide matrix |
| Vertical drive | Positive, TTL-compatible, 50/60 Hz, non-interlaced |
| Horizontal drive | Positive-level TTL, 15.75 kHz |
| Power | Own mains cable and power switch; supply switches automatically between 120 V 60 Hz and 220 V 50 Hz |
| Heat output | 240 BTU/hr |
| Cables | Power 1.83 m (18 AWG); signal 1.5 m (22 AWG) |
| Controls | Front: power, power indicator, brightness, contrast. Rear: vertical hold, vertical size |
Measured at the adapter, CGA horizontal sync is a 4 µs positive-going pulse every 63.7 µs and vertical sync a 190 µs positive-going pulse every 16.7 ms.[3]
Colour 6 is brown
[edit | edit source]With four digital lines, CGA colour 6 (red plus green, low intensity) would be dark yellow. The 5153 has a circuit that detects that combination and reduces the green drive, so the colour appears as brown.[4] minuszerodegrees.net publishes that part of the 5153 schematic.[5] IBM's own CGA documentation names the low-intensity graphics palette "green/red/brown", and IBM's announcement lists brown among the 16 colours.[6][1]
Monitors without the circuit, such as the Amdek Color II before its upgrade board was fitted, show dark yellow in that position, and so does a 5153 whose brown circuit has failed.[7]
Input connector
[edit | edit source]A 9-pin D-shell carrying TTL RGBI.[3]
| Pin | Signal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Ground |
| 2 | Ground |
| 3 | + Red |
| 4 | + Green |
| 5 | + Blue |
| 6 | + Intensity |
| 7 | Not used |
| 8 | + Horizontal sync |
| 9 | + Vertical sync |
Pin 7 is missing from the 5153's plug. That is normal, because CGA does not use it.[8]
Common faults
[edit | edit source]Normal behaviour first: the brightness and contrast knobs on a healthy 5153 are stiff.[8]
A white horizontal line just below the top of the raster is a known, correctable defect. minuszerodegrees.net points to the "Vertical Scan Issue" section of a document on fitting an EGA card to an IBM 5155 for the fix.[8]
The Sams Computerfacts service data gives a symptom-to-circuit chart and a troubleshooting section for the 5153:[9]
| Symptom | Where to look |
|---|---|
| No picture, no raster | AC power supply, then the supplies derived from horizontal output transformer T401 |
| Raster but no picture | Source voltages from T401 |
| No raster | The HV rectifier, which is part of T401 |
| Dead supply | AC line fuse F801; if it has blown, check bridge rectifier D801–D804, DC-to-DC converter transformer T802, output transistor Q801 and SCR Q805. Expect 153 V at the cathode of D801 and 115 V at the cathode of D815, measured from the isolated ground |
| No vertical deflection | Inject a vertical signal at pin 2 of sync processor IC Q402. If deflection returns, work around Q402; if not, check vertical driver Q301, vertical output transistors Q302 and Q303, electrolytic C315 and the yoke's vertical winding |
| Poor vertical linearity or foldover | Vertical feedback and bias circuits: D301–D306, C315, side pincushion transformer T402 |
| Yellow raster (no blue) | Chroma and blue output circuits |
| Cyan raster (no red) | Chroma and red output circuits |
| Magenta raster (no green) | Chroma and green output circuits |
Component failures reported by repairers in the minuszerodegrees.net monitor repair database include:[10]
- Dead or shutting down: C812 (1 µF), C815 (4.7 µF 50 V), C826 (47 µF), C821 (47 µF), C507, C537 and C567 (2.2 µF), fusible resistor R213 (2.2 Ω ½ W), the flyback (TFB150A), T401 (TLN114) and Q801 (2SD1185).
- Dim: R438 (200 kΩ) and C509 (4.7 µF 250 V) on the CRT board.
- Picture drifting sideways: C213 (1 µF).
- No vertical sync: vertical IC Q402 (HA11235), then C305 (140 pF) and C307 (470 pF).
- Vertical collapse: C308 (330 µF 16 V) shorted, which opened R312.
- Other vertical faults: C302 (1 µF 50 V) near the HA11235.
CRT safety
[edit | edit source]The 5153 runs from the mains and its CRT keeps a dangerous anode charge after the set is unplugged. IBM's logic diagram carries the warning that voltages up to 450 V exist on the printed circuit boards.[2] Sams takes power supply measurements from an isolated ground, so use the correct reference.[9] Discharge the tube before working inside; see CRT Discharge Procedure.
