Atari 800XE General Maintenance

From RetroTechCollection
Atari 800XE

The Atari 800XE is the PAL Atari 65XE with the cartridge expansion port under another name, built on the 130XE's main board with 64 KB fitted.[1] Maintain it as a 130XE: the cleaning, connector, power pack and colour adjustment procedures are on Atari 130XE General Maintenance. What is specific to the 800XE is below.

The board

Item Detail
Assembly CA200519, title block "65XE/800XE (64X4) C103579-001", shared with the late 65XE[2]
RAM Two 4464 (64K × 4) DRAMs at U9 and U10, 64 KB[2]
Unused positions U34 and U35, used for bank switching on the 130XE version of the artwork[2]
Power input J7, 7-pin DIN socket (Atari C061838)[3]
Colour control R38, 500 kΩ preset (Atari C023030-04 on the 130XE)[3]

Power supply

[edit | edit source]

The 800XE runs from +5 V DC through the 7-pin DIN socket. The board carries the socket, the power switch and filtering, and has no rectifier or regulator.[2][3] Atari's XL/XE power pack is C061982.[3] The JER/Eightbitter reproduction draws the pack with a transformer, bridge, 4700 µF capacitor and LM78S05 regulator and gives its output as 5 V ±5 %, 1.5 A maximum.[2]

Sams' service checks for the 130XE, which uses the same power arrangement: measure 5.0 V between pins 3 and 1 of the pack's plug with the pack unplugged from the computer, and if a pack has failed, check the computer for a short between pins 3 and 1 of J7 with the power switch on before fitting a new pack.[4] The full procedure is at Atari 130XE General Maintenance#Power supply.

Opening the machine

[edit | edit source]

From the reproduction's section 4: remove the four screws holding the bottom cover to the top cover, lift off the top cover, disconnect and remove the keyboard, remove the seven screws holding the shielded board, lift it out, unbend the seven shield tabs and separate the shields.[2] See Atari 130XE General Maintenance#Opening the machine.

Capacitors

[edit | edit source]

The board has eleven electrolytics, the largest 470 µF, three of them non-polarised. The list is on the Atari 800XE Capacitor Replacement Guide.

Self test

[edit | edit source]

Hold OPTION while switching on, with no cartridge fitted and no powered disk drive: OPTION disables BASIC and the machine runs the self test.[1] From the BASIC prompt, typing BYE also starts it.[4] The menu offers MEMORY, AUDIO VISUAL, KEYBOARD and ALL TESTS: SELECT moves the bar, START runs the test and SYSTEM RESET exits.[2]
