The Atari SC1435 is a 14-inch colour monitor that Atari sold for the ST range from late 1990. Philips built it, and atari-computermuseum.de describes it as based on the Philips CM8833-II and as the only ST colour monitor with stereo sound, which the STE and Falcon030 can use.[1] It replaced the 12-inch Atari SC1224.[3] Its service manual is a Philips-format manual titled "14" CGA Colour monitor SC1435".[4]

The monitor has a colour CRT with a 25 kV anode supply and a mains-connected switch-mode power supply. Read CRT Discharge Procedure before opening the case.[2]

The European and USA models differ in the power supply and in a few parts; the service manual gives separate power supply diagrams for 110 V and 220 V and lists the parts that differ.[5][6]

Inputs and controls

[edit | edit source]

The video input is a 9-pin D connector. atari-computermuseum.de lists the ST cable as a 9-pin D to 13-pin DIN lead.[1]

9-pin D input (service manual)[2]
Pin Signal Level Impedance
1, 2 Ground
3, 4, 5 Red, green, blue Linear 0.7 V, or TTL (low 0 to 0.8 V, high 2.4 to 5 V) 75 Ω
6 Intensity TTL 75 Ω
7 Composite sync 0.3 to 0.5 V
8 Horizontal sync TTL 75 Ω
9 Vertical sync TTL, same polarity as horizontal

The two audio inputs, BU4 (right) and BU5 (left), take 177 mV rms into 10 kΩ, and the headphone socket gives 2.1 V rms into 32 Ω.[2] The front panel has the headphone socket, the GREEN switch (green-screen display), and the volume, contrast, brightness and horizontal centring controls. The rear has the mains switch and socket, the vertical centring, picture height and picture width presets, the 9-pin D input and the two audio inputs.[4][7]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

The SC1435 has a main panel and a CRT panel.[5] The power supply is a switch-mode design on the main panel: a pulse-width regulator (7421) drives the switching transistor 7432 on the primary of the power transformer 5401, an optocoupler (7401) carries the feedback from the secondary side, and a thyristor (7452) provides X-ray protection. The secondaries give the main line, marked 129 V on the diagram and set to 128 V with preset 3414, a 15 V line and a 12 V stabiliser (7450).[6][7] The primary side is marked "hot ground" on the diagram and "life part" on the board layout.[6][8] The mains fuse 1401 is T2A on the 220 V model and T3A on the 110 V model.[5] The RGB processing uses a TDA3505 video processor.[9]

[edit | edit source]

Sources agree that the SC1435 is a Philips design shared with other brands but name different models. atari-computermuseum.de says it is based on the Philips CM8833-II; AtariForumWiki calls it "virtually identical to Commodore 1084 & Philips CM8833-II"; Wikipedia's ST article calls it a rebadged Magnavox 1CM135.[1][10][3]

Known faults

[edit | edit source]

An owner who replaced all the electrolytic capacitors in an SC1435 reported a clear improvement in picture sharpness, and warned that one capacitor is non-polarised and must be replaced with a non-polarised part.[11] See Atari SC1435 Capacitor Replacement Guide and Atari SC1435 General Maintenance.
