The Atari SM146 is a 14-inch paper-white monochrome monitor for the Atari ST family, built for Atari by AOC International of Taiwan and sold from the summer of 1992. It replaced the GoldStar-built SM144 and kept that model's stand, which fits the Mega STE case.[1] Like the Atari SM124, it shows the ST's 640 × 400 high resolution at a 35.7 kHz line rate.[1]
The monitor has a picture tube and a switch-mode power supply that rectifies the mains directly. Read CRT Discharge Procedure before opening the case.[3]
History
[edit | edit source]atari-computermuseum.de says AOC made the SM146 for Atari from 1992 to about 1993 as the successor to the SM144, which GoldStar had built in 1991 and 1992. It went on sale in Europe and the United Kingdom in the summer of 1992 at DM 298, and carries factory code T1.[1] The rating label on the back gives 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz, 0.6 A and "Made in Taiwan".[2]

Hardware
[edit | edit source]The schematic is headed "CMPC-146" and carries revision dates from June 1991 to February 1992.[3]
- Power supply: the mains passes the fuse F901 and the filters L901 and L902 to the bridge D901 to D904 and the reservoir C907 (47 µF 400 V). The controller IC901 (Atari part 56A379-1) drives the MOSFET Q901 and the transformer T901, whose secondaries give 35 V and 12 V. VR901 sits in the controller's feedback.[3]
- Vertical: IC601 (56A157-1), with V-HOLD (VR601), V-SIZE (VR602) and V-LIN (VR603) presets.[3]
- Horizontal: IC801 (56A230-1) drives the output transistor Q802 through the driver transformer T801. The flyback transformer T802 is drawn with two part numbers, 79A355-1 (marked "SAMPC") and 79A355-3 (marked "TAI-HO"), apparently two suppliers. L802 sets the width and L803 the linearity, and the presets are H-PHASE (VR801) and H-HOLD (VR802).[3]
- Video: Q701 to Q703 drive the cathode, with CONTRAST (VR702) on the front panel.[3]
- Brightness: FOCUS (VR803), SUB-BRIGHT (VR804) and BRIGHT (VR805).[3]
- Sound: IC501 (56A205-2) drives the speaker S501, with VOLUME (VR501).[3]
IC601's Atari part number, 56A157-1, is the one Atari's SM125 manual uses for its TDA1170N vertical IC.[3][4]
Repair
[edit | edit source]No service manual for the SM146 has been found; the schematic is the only document. The electrolytic capacitors read off it are listed in the Atari SM146 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
