Atari SLM804 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

Documentation for the Atari SLM804 laser printer and its SLMC804 controller: a scanned compilation of TEC and Atari service material, and Atari's programming document for the controller.

SLM804 service manual and SLMC804 schematics

[edit | edit source]

A 31-page scan catalogued on the Internet Archive as the "Atari SLM804 Service Manual [Sep 1987]".[1] It is a compilation. The TEC service manual whose cover it carries (Service Manual Model SLM-804, document E0-16172A, original June 1987, revised September 1987, Tokyo Electric Co., Ltd.) is represented only by its first chapter, the specification.[1] The rest is schematics and drawings.

2 and 3 TEC "Laser Printer Power Supply 200V", drawing SLE52-00301, for board SLE61-0081, April 1987. Designators only, no values
4 to 7 TEC "MCON-T CCT", the engine controller, drawing JRE52-05101, January 1987, revised April 1987. The article name "LB-1301" is crossed out and "SLM-804" written in
8 Atari (Japan) Corporation "Schematic Diagram SLMC 804", drawing C026455 Rev. 2, sheet 1 of 3: 6801 microcontroller, 4.0 MHz crystal, DMA bus side. Drawn 28 July 1987
9 An SLMC804 interface page without a title block, marked with an arrow labelled "Canno" (cut off by the scan edge): buffers, 75113 line drivers and a 29.821 MHz oscillator
10 SLMC804 schematic sheet 2 of 3, marked "TEC": 74LS14 and 7408 buffers to the TEC engine signals
11 and 12 SLMC804 schematic sheet 3 of 3: pull-ups and filter capacitors on the engine lines and the 37-way connector J3, which takes +5 V from the printer on pins 16, 17, 35 and 36
13 and 14 SLMC804 printed circuit board drawing C100519 Rev. 2: silk screen and layout

Atari page printer interface document

[edit | edit source]

Atari Corp., The Atari Page Printer Interface, Sunnyvale, California, dated 13 April 1988, RCS revision 1.1.[2] It describes the host side of the SLMC804: how a program on the ST talks to the controller over the DMA bus. It states that it does not cover the interface between the controller and the printer engine.[2] Printed page n is PDF page n + 2.

Contents of The Atari Page Printer Interface
Printed page Contents
2 Introduction: the controller as translator between the DMA bus and the engine's video interface; command, data out and status phases
3 to 12 Command definitions: Request Sense (0x03), Print (0x0a), Inquiry (0x12), Mode Select (0x15), Mode Sense (0x1a) and its parameter list, Stop Print (0x1b)
13 to 16 Status definitions: the status byte and the table of error codes
