Atari XMM801 Documentation

From RetroTechCollection

The Atari XMM801 documentation below comprises Atari's field service manual and owner's manual for the Atari XMM801 dot-matrix printer.

XMM801 Field Service Manual

[edit | edit source]

The XMM801 Field Service Manual is Atari Corp.'s service manual for the printer, publication CO 70435, dated October 1985. The cover is printed "Atari (U.S.) Corp."; the back cover gives Atari Corp., 1265 Borregas Avenue, Sunnyvale, and a 1985 copyright. The hosted scan has 58 PDF pages. The main section runs from page 1 to page 43, and an eight-page section on the printer mechanism, numbered 1 to 8, follows it.

B Basic structure: power supply, CPU and control circuit block, printer mechanism, connections between modules, interface outline, SIO bus timing, functional block diagrams, power-on timing chart 3-7
C1 Power supply: circuit diagrams for the 220/240 V and 100/115 V types with fuse and transformer table; filter board layout 8-9
C2 Operation keyboard (switch board): circuit diagram and layout 9
C3 Main control board: circuit diagram (Figure 18) and parts layout (Figure 19) 10-11
C4 Atari serial input/output interface board: circuit diagram and layout 12
C5 Printer mechanism connection diagram (head, home position switch, paper end sensor, carriage motor strobe sensor, motors) 13
D Troubleshooting: symptom table, four check flowcharts, check points REF.7-0 to REF.7-19, typical waveforms 14-25
E Parts list: main board, interface board, switch board, power supplies (UL/CSA, European, UK), case and assembly parts, printer unit, ribbon, accessories and packing; exploded views 26-43
Services for printer mechanism: materials, tools and gauges; print head; ribbon gear assembly and belt tension; carriage motor; home position switch; paper end sensor; FPC cable 1-8

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • Printed page 24 of the waveform section (figures g to m) is missing from the scan; the hosted file goes from page 23 to page 25.
  • A parts list or service procedure for the inside of the printer mechanism beyond the eight pages at the end. The manual says repair of the mechanism unit is not recommended in the field and that a separate mechanism service manual would be provided; that manual is not part of this scan.
  • Some drawings were carried over from the version of the design with a Centronics-type parallel interface: Figure 3 and the internal structure drawing label the interface board "Centronics P.C.B. Ass'y", and the check point conditions refer to DIP switches on a Centronics parallel interface board, which the XMM801 does not have.

The manual disagrees with itself in a few places, which matters when ordering parts:

  • The circuit diagram labels the 3,300 µF reservoir after the bridge BD1 as C22; the parts list and the board layout call it C2, and C22 is a 0.1 µF ceramic at the CPU supply pins.
  • The circuit diagram marks C8 as 3.3 µF 16 V and C24 as 10 µF 16 V; the parts list gives 50 V and 35 V.
  • The parts list gives the ROM as a 2764 (X801.1D) and the circuit diagram as a 2764 (2364), but check points REF.7-6 and REF.7-9 call it a 27128.
  • The circuit diagram shows R29 as 220 Ω; a note in the parts list says it was changed to 100 Ω so that either driver IC type can be fitted at IC3, IC4 and IC6.
  • The head gap procedure uses a 0.35 mm feeler gauge, while the gauge table at the start of the mechanism section lists 0.5 mm for the head gap.
