Atari XF551 Documentation
The Atari XF551 documentation below comprises Atari's schematic of the Atari XF551 controller board and power supply, and the owner's manual packed with the drive.
Schematic Diagram XF551 (FCC)
[edit | edit source]The Schematic Diagram XF551 (FCC) is Atari (Japan) Corporation's drawing C100727, revision 1, sheet 1 of 2. It is stamped "Preliminary Release" and dated 19 November 1987; the title block gives the next assembly as CA200107. The hosted PDF has two pages, the left and right halves of sheet 1.
Contents
[edit | edit source]- Left half: the SIO connectors J2 and J3 with the data, command and data-in circuits (Q1 to Q3, U3); drive select switch S2 and its table; microcontroller U1 (8040, with the 8040/8050 jumper on pin 7); disk controller U2 (WD1772-02); reset capacitor C113; the power input J1 and switch S1.
- Right half: the 34-way drive interface J4 and its signals; the 8.333 MHz oscillator; the power supply (L1, bridge D1, voltage doubler C102, D2 and D3, regulators Q5 and Q6 (7812) with their capacitors) and the drive power connector J5; the title block.
What this schematic does not contain
[edit | edit source]- Sheet 2, which is not in the scan. Sheet 1 sends the data bus to U5 and the address and chip-enable lines to U6, neither of which is drawn on it; Gramblička identifies the firmware chip U6 as a 2764 EPROM and the board as also carrying a 74LS373 latch.[1]
- Any part of the drive mechanism's own electronics.
- A parts list. The values are written on the drawing.
- Board-version changes. Igor Gramblička reports a 1988 board with a different power supply and 74LS14 wiring, and points out that the jumper labels on pin 7 of U1 are wrong.[2]

What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- Any description of the XF551's double-density or double-sided modes; DOS 2.5 uses only the 810 and 1050 formats.
- Service information.
- A correct processor entry. Appendix M gives a 6507 microprocessor and a 127K dual-density format, which belong to the 1050; Atari's schematic shows an 8040.[3]
