Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS General Maintenance

Routine care, consumable lives and service parts for the Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS. The printer uses the case of the LaserWriter Pro 600/630, so the user-level cleaning is the same as on Apple LaserWriter Pro 600/630 General Maintenance; its engine parts, fans and toner cartridge rules differ, and those are set out here.[1] Fault-finding is on Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS Troubleshooting Guide.

Safety

[edit | edit source]
  • Switch off and unplug the printer before servicing; it runs at high voltages.[1]
  • Never disconnect the beam-detect cabling or the laser shutter with the printer on, and never remove the cover of the laser/scanner assembly, on or off. Keep shiny tools out of the beam path.[1]
  • Leave the printer switched off for at least 5 minutes before working on the fuser rollers.[1]
  • Toner is plastic, iron and a little pigment. Clean it off with a dry tissue and then cold water; hot water sets it into fabric. Keep it away from vinyl.[1]
  • The printer weighs 42 lb (19.1 kg) with its cassette; Apple's safety section warns against straining your back when moving it.[1]

Toner cartridge

[edit | edit source]

Apple's cartridge made for the 16/600 PS is M2473G/A. Revision B LaserWriter Pro 600/630 cartridges, introduced in late 1993, also work and can be recognised by a 1 × 3.5 in moulded ridge on top. Apple warns that the original Pro 600/630 cartridge, without the ridge, must not be used in this printer.[1] Cover a cartridge whenever it is out of the printer: light on the drum causes print faults, and an exposed drum recovers after about 24 hours in the dark.[1]

At each cartridge change, clean the inside as Apple's LaserWriter Pro owner's guide describes for the shared case: brush the antistatic teeth with the green-handled cleaning brush and clip it back in its holder. Clean the outside with a damp cloth and never with ammonia-based cleaners.[2]

Replace the multipurpose pickup roller and the separation pad together.[1] The Service Source names the third fan as the front fan in its specifications and as the internal fan in table 9; it runs only while printing.[1]

Paper

[edit | edit source]

The standard cassette and the optional 500-sheet lower cassette take 16-24 lb plain paper; the multipurpose tray takes 16-32 lb paper, envelopes and fuser-compatible labels and film. Do not use envelopes with clasps, snaps, windows or synthetic materials; peel-off strips and double flaps must use fuser-compatible adhesive.[1]

Memory

[edit | edit source]

Only five RAM layouts are supported (8, 12, 16, 24 and 32 MB). Others are likely to give an engine error at start-up. SIMMs are 72-pin, 80 ns or faster; 16 MB SIMMs must use 2K refresh. Wear an earthing strap: Apple notes the SIMMs are very sensitive to static. The full table is on the main page.[1]

Capacitors

[edit | edit source]

Apple's documents for the 16/600 PS give no component-level parts list and no capacitor values, so there is no recapping guide. The only capacitor named is C208 on the DC controller, which holds a fuser error for about 10 minutes; the discharge procedure is on the troubleshooting page.[1]
