The PowerBook Duo MiniDock is Apple's portable dock for the PowerBook Duo. It clamps to the 152-pin docking connector on the back of the Duo and gives it a set of desktop ports, while the Duo's own display, keyboard and battery stay in use.[1][2] Apple introduced it with the Duo 210 and 230 on 19 October 1992; Wikipedia and EveryMac give its model number as M7780.[3][2] The Duo FAQ of 1994 says E-Machines built it for Apple.[4] For a dock with NuBus slots and a floppy drive inside, see Apple PowerBook Duo Dock; for floppy and ADB alone, see Apple PowerBook Duo Floppy Adapter.
Ports and specifications
[edit | edit source]| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Docking connector | Internal 152-pin processor-direct slot connector to the Duo; 32-bit expansion bus |
| Video | DB-15; 512K VRAM; Apple displays up to 16 in colour and some VGA monitors with an adapter; 256 colours or greys |
| Floppy | HDI-20 port for the external 1.4 MB floppy drive |
| SCSI | HDI-30 port, 1.5 MB/s, built-in terminator; up to five external devices; an HDI-30 SCSI system cable is needed for devices |
| ADB | One port, mini DIN-4; 200 mA in total |
| Serial | Two RS-422 ports, mini DIN-8 |
| Sound | Mono sound in and mono sound out |
| Modem | Telephone pass-through for the Duo's internal Express Modem; RJ-11 (US) or mini DIN-8 (international) |
| Power | Apple lists a universal 85–270 V AC supply at 47–63 Hz; the MiniDock has a port for the Duo's power adapter[5] |
| Security | Slot for a security cable |
| Operating temperature | 10–40 °C |
Apple's Apple Facts sheets of February 1993 and October 1994 say the SCSI port supports up to six devices, one more than the Service Source.[5][6] The Duo 2300c Service Source limits ADB devices on a MiniDock to 100 mA.[7] Apple listed the HDI-30 SCSI System Cable, the HDI-30 SCSI Disk Adapter, the HDI-20 External 1.4MB Floppy Disk Drive and the Duo AC Adapter as its accessories.[5]
Using the MiniDock
[edit | edit source]- SCSI disk mode: with the HDI-30 SCSI Disk Adapter, the MiniDock lets another Macintosh use the Duo as an external hard disk. Apple's Duo Service Source lists the MiniDock as required for this.[5][8]
- Battery: EveryMac says a Duo on a MiniDock runs from its battery for an hour to an hour and a half.[2]
- Lid closed: closing the Duo's lid tells it to sleep, and a Duo docked to a mini dock with an external monitor does not support sleep, so it keeps showing error messages. The Duo FAQ's workaround is to shut the Duo down, dock it and start it from the external keyboard with the lid already closed.[4]
- A 2300c on a MiniDock may be run at up to 35 °C ambient, against 30 °C inside a Duo Dock.[9]
- The Duo FAQ notes that a Kensington cable through the MiniDock's security slot secures the dock but not the Duo, which can still be unlatched.[4]
Construction
[edit | edit source]
The MiniDock is a logic board between a top cover and a bottom cover, with a mechanical latch assembly that hooks into the Duo and a modem interface card for the telephone pass-through. The case is held by self-threading Torx T-6 screws.[10] The configuration ROM is a socketed 32-pin PLCC part, unlike the surface-mounted ROM of the Duo Dock.[11] The logic board carries four surface-mount electrolytic capacitors; their replacement is on Apple PowerBook Duo MiniDock Capacitor Replacement Guide.
| Part | Number |
|---|---|
| Top cover | 815-1262 |
| Bottom cover assembly | 815-1263 |
| Logic board | 661-1664 |
| Mechanical latch assembly | 922-0103 |
| Modem interface card | 922-0095 (US), 922-0094 (international) |
Troubleshooting
[edit | edit source]Apple's symptom charts start by disconnecting the MiniDock and testing the Duo alone, and end with a new MiniDock logic board.[12]
| Symptom | Probable cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Error chords after the startup chord, or no response | Duo, MiniDock logic board | Disconnect the MiniDock and test the Duo alone; check the logic board's cable connections; replace the logic board.[12] |
| No picture or a poor picture on the external display | Video cable, display, logic board | Adjust contrast; reseat and then replace the video cable; try a known-good display; replace the logic board.[12] |
| External floppy drive does not work, will not eject, or gives read errors | Disk, floppy cable, drive, logic board | Try a known-good disk; check, then replace, the floppy cable; replace the drive. To eject, hold the mouse or trackball button while switching on, or use a straightened paper clip in the hole beside the slot.[12] |
| Device on the modem port does not work | Control panel setting, cables, modem interface card, logic board | Select External Modem in the PowerBook control panel; check cables; test the device on the Duo's own port; replace the modem interface card, then the logic board.[12] |
| Cannot connect or disconnect the MiniDock | Mechanical latch | Apple's cure is a new mechanical latch.[12] For a MiniDock that will not let go of a Duo, Trash80toHP_Mini levers the release handle up with a long 1/8 in flat screwdriver pushed into the handle slot, which pushes the back of the claw lever down at the same time.[13] |
| Latch fails to pull the Duo fully on | Latch alignment, broken clip | jmacz found a broken clip rattling inside his MiniDock and repaired it before recapping; he also reports a weak clamping action on the MiniDock like the one on his Duo Dock.[14] |
Warning: never take the mounting clips off the posts at the ends of the latch. They hold the link, which is under spring pressure and can fly up and hit you.[10]
