AppleCD 600i
The AppleCD 600i is Apple's internal quad-speed (4×) tray-loading SCSI CD-ROM drive, the internal counterpart of the AppleCD 600e. Apple listed it as a service part (661-0913) for the Macintosh IIvx family, and the Power Macintosh 6100 symptom charts give it its own entry.[1][2][3] It is documented in the Service Sources of the computers it was fitted to.
Hardware
[edit | edit source]The llamamusic.com photographs show the front with the tray, a busy light and the eject button, and the back with an analogue audio connector, a jumper block, the 50-pin SCSI connector and a 4-pin power connector.[4]
The mechanism is not always the same make. A 68kMLA member found a Matsushita CR-504-K in his AppleCD 600i, while Herb Johnson's Retrotechnology lists the Sony CDU-75S for the AppleCD 600 and 600i.[5][3] Apple's own Service Sources call the drive in some machines simply the "AppleCD 600"; the Power Macintosh 6100/WS 6150 manual lists an internal AppleCD 600 as standard in the Workgroup Server 6150/66.[1]
Known faults
[edit | edit source]Apple's symptom chart for the Power Macintosh 6100 has an entry for computers with the 600i: if the drive makes stuttering sounds when playing CD+ or CD-R discs, or a CD-ROM disc will not mount, replace the CD-ROM drive. The same chart's general CD-ROM entries cover a drive that will not accept a disc (try another disc, then the drive, then the SCSI data cable), a missing drive icon (check the CD-ROM extension is in the System Folder) and a disc that will not eject (turn off file sharing, eject manually, or press the eject button behind the front bezel if it can be reached).[1] The external AppleCD 600e has the same CD+ entry in its own Service Source.[6]
A 600i that would not read discs, and gave a single click when asked to mount one, was brought back by opening the mechanism and dusting it carefully. The owner reached the internals by prising four plastic pins at the corners out of the top and side metal casing with a flat screwdriver, after removing the bottom plate and front bezel.[5] Apple's care rules for its tray drives apply: do not leave the tray open, do not force it, and do not wipe the lens with a paper towel.[7] The AppleCD 600e Troubleshooting Guide covers the external version and the tray-release procedure.
