The Apple Hard Disk 160SC is Apple's 160 MB external SCSI hard disk. It uses the case of the 20SC, 40SC and 80SC, with some parts of its own.[1] It connects directly to the external SCSI port of the Macintosh Plus, SE, SE/30, II, IIx and IIcx.[2] Inside is a half-height 5.25-inch drive; Apple sold the same 160 MB mechanism as an internal option for the Macintosh II and IIx.[3] The case, take-apart and repair are covered on Apple Hard Disk SC General Maintenance and Apple Hard Disk SC Troubleshooting Guide.
Apple's 1994 Apple External Hard Drive, built by La Cie, also came in a 160 MB model with "160SC" on its front panel. It is a different, later drive in a vertical case.[4]

Differences from the smaller models
[edit | edit source]Apple's parts list gives the 160SC its own versions of several case parts: a platinum case top (630-5802), case bottom (630-5647), hard disk frame (805-5081), an end bracket with the LED cable (076-0380), fan (699-5017) and drive-to-case cable (590-4037). The external 160 MB hard disk assembly is 661-0584.[1]
- The LED cable comes off the end bracket with four screws, and Apple calls for a small Torx screwdriver for them.[1]
- Like the external 20 MB drive, the external 160 MB service module ships in a frame that fits the external case and needs no reconfiguring. Apple's other external modules have to be converted from their internal configuration first.[1]
- Apple also made a 3.5-inch 160 MB drive (661-0625), but only as an internal drive for the Macintosh IIci and IIfx.[1]
Apple II
[edit | edit source]Apple's documents disagree on whether the 160SC works with an Apple II. The 1989 announcement article says it cannot be used with the Apple II family, and the drive matrix in Apple's 1991 service procedures marks the 160 MB drives as Macintosh only.[3][1] The same service procedures also say any Apple SCSI drive can be connected to an Apple II SCSI card, but that the four-partition limit of ProDOS leaves much of a 160SC's capacity out of reach.[1]
Termination
[edit | edit source]A Tech Info Library article describes a Macintosh IIci with an internal drive that would not start once an external Apple 160 MB drive was added, although a 40 MB drive worked in its place. Apple's suggestions were to switch the external drive on before the Macintosh, set its SCSI ID to a number from 1 to 6, try it on another Macintosh without an internal drive, and swap the cable and terminator.[5]
