AppleCD 300i
The AppleCD 300i is Apple's internal double-speed CD-ROM drive of 1992, a caddy-loading SCSI drive fitted in the removable-media bay of a Macintosh. The AppleCD 300i Plus of 1994 replaced the caddy with a powered tray, and Apple's service manuals for several 1993-1995 machines call the tray-loading internal drive the AppleCD 300 Plus or AppleCD 300+.[1][2] The external counterparts are the AppleCD 300 and the AppleCD 300e Plus.
AppleCD 300i
[edit | edit source]The 300i reads HFS, ISO 9660 and High Sierra discs, plays audio CDs and opens Kodak multisession Photo CD discs, which need QuickTime and the Photo CD extension. It works with CD-ROM XA, CD+G and CD+MIDI discs when suitable software is installed. Its SCSI ID is 3.[1] Apple's AppleCD 300 Speed Switch control panel switches it between Faster and Standard Speed for programs that do not work correctly at double speed.[1] The drive motor stops when the caddy is ejected or when the disc has not been used for a few minutes, and starts again when the drive is accessed or a disc is inserted.[1]
Apple's Service Sources list the AppleCD 300i as the CD-ROM drive of the Macintosh LC 520, the Performa 550 and 560, and the Macintosh TV, and give its service part number as 661-1646 in the Macintosh IIvx family.[3][4][5][6]

The 300i Plus guide gives the laser as a semiconductor GaAlAs laser of 790 ± 25 nm and 0.2 mW output, a Class 1 laser product.[7]
AppleCD 300i Plus
[edit | edit source]The 300i Plus is the internal version of the AppleCD 300e Plus: double speed, a 256K cache, SCSI-2 and a powered tray that takes 8 cm and 12 cm discs. Apple sold it as order number M3152LL/A for Macintosh models with a half-height 5.25-inch removable-drive bay; it needed an adapter kit and installation by an authorised Apple service provider. The data sheet gives its size as 4.25 × 14.8 × 21.0 cm and its weight as 0.95 kg, and its supply requirement as 5 V DC at 350 mA maximum and 12 V DC at 1.5 A maximum.[2]
AppleCD 300 Plus
[edit | edit source]Apple used several names for the internal tray-loading double-speed drive in its Service Sources. The Macintosh LC 520/550/575 manual calls the LC 550 and LC 575 drive the "caddyless CD 300+" and the "AppleCD 300+", and the Performa 500 Series manual calls the Performa 575, 577 and 578 drive the "AppleCD 300+i, double-speed CD-ROM drive (trayloading, caddyless)".[3][4] The Power Macintosh 6100/WS 6150 manual lists an "Internal AppleCD 300 Plus CD-ROM drive" in the 6100/60AV and in some 6100/66 and 6100/66AV models.[8]
The tray drive does not fit every chassis that took the caddy drive. In the LC 520/550/575 manual, the earlier chassis harness assemblies (922-1824 and 922-0557) place the CD-ROM connector bridge about 1½ inches above the drive bay and support only drives earlier than the 300i+, while chassis 661-1094, with the bridge 1/2 inch above the bay, is the one for the 300i+.[3]
Care and troubleshooting
[edit | edit source]
Apple's guides give these rules and fixes. The drive is serviced as part of the host Macintosh; see the Service Source for the machine.[1][7]
- Never move the computer with a disc or caddy in the drive. Dust on the lens can stop the drive reading discs.
- 300i Plus: do not leave the tray open, put nothing on it, and do not force it open by hand. Do not wipe the lens with a paper towel or anything abrasive; Apple referred owners to an authorised service provider for a lens cleaner.
- 300i caddy jammed or only partly ejected: switch the computer off, straighten at least 3 inches of a large paper clip and push it firmly and horizontally into the pinhole below and to the right of the drive door. Apple warns that doing this with the power on may damage the drive. If the next caddy then will not load, shut down, wait about fifteen seconds and start up again. A caddy that comes part way out and is pulled back in, over and over, has the disc edge resting on the hinge of the caddy door: catch the caddy with a straightened paper clip as it comes out, pull it free and reseat the disc flat.
- 300i Plus tray will not open: press the Open/Close button; if that fails, switch the computer off and push a large straightened paper clip into the small pinhole to the lower right of the tray opening, push gently until the tray is released and pull it out carefully. Forcing it can break the front of the tray.
- Disc ejected without an error message, or icon not appearing: make sure the disc lies flat with the label up and the tray is fully closed, and that the CD-ROM software is installed; restart.
- Jerky video or poorly synchronised sound on a 300i: set the AppleCD 300 Speed Switch control panel to Standard Speed.
