Apple External SCSI Hard Drive
The Apple External Hard Drive is a range of external SCSI hard disks for the Macintosh, sold under the Apple name in 160 MB, 230 MB, 500 MB and 1 GB sizes. Apple's Tech Info Library described it from September 1993, and a 1994 advertisement says the drives were "manufactured exclusively by La Cie, Ltd. a Quantum Company".[1][2] It is a later and different product from Apple's own Hard Disk 20SC, 40SC, 80SC and 160SC, although its 160 MB model also carries "160SC" on the front.[2]
Apple marked the range discontinued on 23 September 1994. In May 1995 it added a note to its own description: "This drive was never released or supported by Apple Computer, Inc. LaCie sold this drive in multiple hard drive sizes, and provided all support for it."[1]

Design
[edit | edit source]The drive stands vertically or lies flat. Its front panel has the power switch and a SCSI ID display; the advertisement shows a pop-up door on the front that covers the SCSI address switch.[1][2] Apple's 1995 correction to the user's guide says to leave the feet off when the drive lies horizontally, and that Apple does not recommend stacking one of these drives on another; the guide's instructions for vertical use stand.[3]
Each drive came with a power cord, a 25-to-50-pin SCSI cable and a terminator, the Apple External Hard Drive User's Guide, and preinstalled DiskDoubler, Central Point Safe & Sound and Central Point Backup, with Apple HD SC Setup and Disk First Aid. The bundled software needs System 6.0.5 or later. Apple listed it for the Macintosh SE/30 and later, and for any Macintosh with a SCSI connector.[1]
Care and repair
[edit | edit source]By Apple's 1995 note, La Cie and not Apple provided support for the drive.[1] For general SCSI drive care, termination and mechanism replacement, see Hard Drive Maintenance and Repair; Apple's general hard drive procedures are in Apple Hard Drives Service Source.
