Apple OneScanner Dispatcher is the scanning program Apple supplied with the Apple Color OneScanner 600/27 and the Apple Color OneScanner 1200/30. It scans, edits and archives images and documents, and passes them by drag and drop to a printer, a fax program, the Xerox TextBridge OCR program or other applications. A plug-in module lets Adobe Photoshop and compatible programs scan directly.[1][2] Apple's Tech Info Library mentions versions 1.0 and 1.0.2. The 1200/30 came with Dispatcher 2.0, which Apple described as having several enhancements over the original.[3][4] Dispatcher does not support the original Apple Color OneScanner.[5]

Features

[edit | edit source]

The Dispatcher window has four buttons (Scan, Scan Router, Image Edit and Archive) and a row of drag-and-drop icons for Print, Fax, TextBridge and up to three more applications of the user's choice.[2] The image editor has the usual tool palette: selection rectangle, grabber, paint bucket, eraser, spray can, clone, lasso, zoom, text, pencil, paintbrush and smudge. It opens JPEG, TIFF, PICT, Photoshop 2.5 and EPS files and can use Photoshop-compatible filters such as Kai's Power Tools.[1] Three automatic functions work from the prescan: Suggest a Crop, Adjust Tone and Straighten.[1]

Requirements

[edit | edit source]

Dispatcher needs at least 3 MB of free RAM, and TextBridge needs 4 MB; running both needs 7 MB free on top of the system's own use.[2] It needs a display of at least 640 × 480. On a Macintosh 12-inch RGB display, at 512 × 384, the controls fall off the screen and the program cannot be used.[6]

Known problems

Dispatcher problems and Apple's answers (Tech Info Library)
Problem Cause or fix
Dispatcher window does not appear at launch (version 2.0) Version 2.0 remembers whether the window was closed. Choose Dispatcher from the Window menu or press Command-0 (zero).[7]
Straighten does nothing The feature needs a document with clear, high-contrast rectangular edges, some image content, and space from the edges of the scan window. Use Rotate, Arbitrary in the image editor instead.[8]
Automatic Straighten rotates the image 30-45 degrees or scales it wrongly (1.0, 1.0.2) Do not place the original against the alignment mark and rulers, or do not use Automatic Straighten.[3]
Suggest Crop turns itself on with Straighten Automatically Normal behaviour; draw a selection marquee before scanning.[9]
White line about five pixels tall along the bottom of scans Caused by the Dispatcher software; remove it in an image editor.[10]
Memory missing after quitting, so Photoshop will not open A ColorSync 2.0.1 code fragment is not unloaded and splits free memory. Restart the Macintosh, and quit Dispatcher before running memory-hungry programs.[11]
Scanned image far too big on screen A 300 dpi scan is shown pixel for pixel at about four times print size. Prescan and select only the area needed, change the display resolution before launching, or zoom out.[12]
Cannot choose 12 dpi 12 dpi is the scanner's hardware limit; Dispatcher's lowest setting is 60 dpi, and previews are 75 dpi.[13]
TextBridge's scan option is dimmed If Dispatcher scans normally, delete the Scanner Settings file in the System Folder and the TextBridge Preferences file in the Preferences folder so they are rebuilt.[14]

Scanner hardware faults, such as "Unable to initialize the scanner driver", are covered in the Apple Color OneScanner 600/27 Troubleshooting Guide.
