AppleCD 600e Troubleshooting Guide

Fault-finding for the AppleCD 600e and the AppleCD 300e Plus, from Apple's shared Service Source, Apple's user guides for its tray-loading drives and owners' repair reports. Apple's charts list cures in order of likelihood: try the first, check whether the symptom has gone, and if not, refit the original module before trying the next.[1] Opening the drive is covered on AppleCD 600e General Maintenance.

First checks

[edit | edit source]
  • Make sure the tray is fully closed. It is Apple's first cure for a Macintosh that cannot mount the drive.[1]
  • Put the disc in label side up, lying flat in the tray.[2]
  • Check that the CD-ROM software is installed and restart after installing it. Install it with the Installer; copying the files by hand can leave the Macintosh unable to restart.[2]
  • Check the SCSI ID on the back panel is not shared with another device. Apple's CD-ROM drives use ID 3 as standard.[2]
  • Check the termination of the SCSI chain.
  • The 600e needs System 7.1 or later; the 300e Plus needs System 6.0.7 or later.[3][4]

AppleCD 300e Plus/600e symptom chart[1]
Symptom Apple's cures, in order
Green power light is not on Drive assembly
Drive does not accept a disc Replace the disc if it is dirty or damaged; drive assembly
Headphone jack does not work correctly Drive assembly; enclosure with power supply
Volume control does not work correctly Drive assembly
Speaker jacks do not work Drive assembly; enclosure with power supply
Macintosh cannot mount the drive Make sure the tray is closed; drive assembly; enclosure with power supply
Tray does not open Press the eject button; insert a paper clip in the hole next to the eject button; drive assembly
A CD Plus (CD+) disc makes a stuttering sound and may not mount Replace the CD-ROM drive

Tray will not open

[edit | edit source]

Press the eject button first. If nothing happens, switch off and push a large straightened paper clip firmly and horizontally into the hole next to the eject button, then push gently until the tray is released and pull it open carefully.[1] Apple's 300i Plus guide warns not to force the tray, or the front of the tray may break, and to switch off before using the paper clip, or the drive may be damaged.[2] If neither works, Apple's cure is a new drive assembly.[1]

Drive will not read discs

[edit | edit source]

If the drive accepts a disc but will not read it, suspect dust on the lens. Apple's guides warn that dust on the lens can stop the drive reading discs.[5] In a 68kMLA thread, an internal AppleCD 600i (Matsushita CR-504-K) that gave only a single click when asked to mount a disc was revived by opening the mechanism and dusting it carefully; another member suggested a dusty lens or a loose ribbon cable as the likely causes.[6] The way into that mechanism is described on AppleCD 600e General Maintenance.

Discs in the CD Plus (CD+) format are a known problem: Apple's cure for one that makes the drive stutter and fail to mount is a new CD-ROM drive.[1]

No power or no audio

[edit | edit source]

Apple's only cure for a green power light that stays off is a new drive assembly. For dead headphone or speaker outputs the drive assembly is again first, then the enclosure with power supply.[1] The rear RCA jacks are line outputs for an external amplifier or powered speakers.[3]
