Apple's product guide of 1993 and its online specification page give 47 lb and a depth of 17.6 in, measured with the base.[3][4]

The 832 × 624 mode needs video that supports it; Apple's 1993 guide mentions the 16-inch display among the large displays supported by the PowerBook Duo MiniDock, and lists it with the 12-inch and 14-inch displays for the external video of the PowerBook 160 and 165c.[3]

Hardware

[edit | edit source]

The display has a main board, a CRT/video board on the tube neck, a separate focus control board carrying the FOCUS and H.STAT controls, a contrast/brightness board, an AC inlet assembly and a base board for the ADB and sound connectors.[5]

Service part numbers (Service Source exploded view)[5]
Part Apple number
Main board 661-1634 (Rev. A) or 661-1671 (Rev. B)
CRT/video board 661-1635
CRT assembly 076-0563
Focus control 982-0139
Contrast/brightness assembly 982-0127
AC inlet assembly 076-0077
Fuse 922-0516
Base PC assembly 981-0029
Video cable 590-0734

The two main board revisions are replaced like for like: a board with vendor part number A-1335-028 printed near connector D3 is the original (661-1634); otherwise it is Rev. B (661-1671). A replacement CRT/video board must have switch SW1 set as Apple shows, towards the neck of the tube, or the colours cannot be set correctly and green is oversaturated.[6]

Known faults and normal behaviour

[edit | edit source]

Apple's service manual opens with a chapter on environmental distortion: large monitors bend near metal furniture and jitter near fluorescent lights and appliances, and Apple says to move or turn the display before adjusting it or swapping modules.[7] Two thin horizontal lines, a quarter to a third of the way from the top and bottom, are the support wires of the Trinitron aperture grille and are not a fault.[8] A green vertical line at the left of the screen and an overall green cast are listed against the setting of SW1.[8]

No component-level repair reports or capacitor list for this display have been found, and Apple's documents give no component values.

Maintenance and repair

[edit | edit source]

The CRT keeps a charge after switch-off; follow the CRT Discharge Procedure before working inside.
