Fault-finding for the Apple Color StyleWriter 2200, taken from the symptom charts in Apple's Color StyleWriter 2200 Service Source.[1] Apple lists the cures in order of likelihood. Try the first, check whether the symptom has gone, and move to the next only if it has not; if a module was swapped and did not help, refit the original before trying the next cure.[1]

The printer has two LEDs, power and error. With the printer connected to a Macintosh running the printer software, the driver also names the fault.[1] Routine procedures referred to below (nozzle check, head cleaning, roller cleaning tool, waste ink reset) are on the general maintenance page.

Error conditions

[edit | edit source]
Error LED symptom chart (Service Source, pp. 30-31)[1]
Symptom Cures, in Apple's order
Paper pickup error Add paper. Use only specified media. Check the Page Setup settings. Fan the paper before loading it. Use the pickup roller cleaning tool
Paper jam Check the eject roller for obstructions or damage; clean or replace it. Use the pickup roller cleaning tool
Carriage control error Make sure the ink tank is latched securely
Temperature sensor error Check the cable connections. Replace the logic board
Cleaning error Check the eject roller for obstructions or damage; clean or replace it. Use the pickup roller cleaning tool
Cartridge error Make sure the cartridge and tanks are firmly seated, the latches secure and the cartridge clear of the cover plastic. Replace the cartridge
ROM/RAM error Check the cable connections. Reinstall the printer software. Replace the logic board
Waste ink full error Replace the print unit assembly (661-0240), then reset the waste ink count in the EEPROM
Head temperature error Replace the ink cartridge

The symptom charts say "logic board"; the exploded view calls the same module the controller board (661-0257).[1]

Power and operation

[edit | edit source]
Operation symptom chart (Service Source, p. 27)[1]
Symptom Cures, in Apple's order
No power Check the power cable connections. Replace the power cord. Replace the controller board
Does not print Switch the printer on and restart the computer. Check the interface cable. In the Chooser, check that the right driver and port are selected. Replace the printer driver
Carriage does not move to the centre when the front door is opened with the printer on Make sure the covers are securely closed. Check the carriage for obstructions. Replace the controller board

A low battery pack gives the "Battery low, recharge battery" message.[1] The Service Source gives no output voltage for the AC adapter (922-1281 for 110 V).

Paper handling

[edit | edit source]
Paper symptom chart (Service Source, pp. 25-26)[1]
Symptom Cures, in Apple's order
Paper sticks together Remove excess sheets. Use only specified media. Check Page Setup. Fan the paper
Paper skews Remove excess sheets. Use only specified media. Stack the paper against the left side of the tray and set the guide. Check the sheet feeder rollers and eject roller; clean or replace them
Jam while loading, before printing Remove the paper carefully by hand
Jam inside the printer Pull the paper out carefully in the direction of output
Jam during output, after printing Pull the paper out in the direction of output. Check the eject roller for obstructions or damage; clean or replace it

Print quality symptom chart (Service Source, pp. 28-29)[1]
Symptom Cures, in Apple's order
Missing dots or white streaks Run the nozzle check and print head cleaning. Make sure the cartridges are set firmly. Use only specified media. Replace the cartridge. Replace the logic board
Blurring or smudging Use only specified media. Clean the print head. Replace the cartridge
Missing dots followed by a blob of ink Set the print quality to Best in the driver before printing
Vertical lines distorted or wavy Open and close the blue lever next to the cartridge so that the cartridge seats properly
Poor image at the bottom of the page Increase the bottom margin to at least 0.8 in

The print head is built into each cartridge, which is why Apple's chart replaces the cartridge before the logic board.[1]
