Apple Color OneScanner 600/27 General Maintenance

The Apple Color OneScanner 600/27 and Apple Color OneScanner 1200/30 need little routine care: clean glass, a locked carriage whenever the scanner is moved, careful handling of the optical assembly, and correct SCSI settings. Apple's user's manual covers the owner's side and the Service Source chapters the service side; both apply to the two models.[1][2][3] Faults are worked through in the Apple Color OneScanner 600/27 Troubleshooting Guide.
Carriage lock
[edit | edit source]The carriage is locked for shipping and the scanner will not work while it is locked. To unlock it, lift off the top cover by gripping both sides, turn the lock at the top of the glass 90 degrees with a coin or flat-blade screwdriver, and refit the cover. The small arrow on the lock's dial shows the position, not the screwdriver slot. Relock it before moving or shipping the scanner.[4][2] Do not tip the scanner on its side or turn it upside down.[1]
Cleaning
[edit | edit source]Apple's cleaning procedure:[1]
- Switch off the scanner and the computer and unplug the scanner.
- Dampen a cloth with water or a mild cleaner and wring it out thoroughly.
- Wipe the document glass, the cover and the outside of the case.
- Dry the damp areas with a clean, soft, dry cloth, and wipe dust from the power socket and connectors with a dry cloth.
Do not spray water or cleaner onto the glass: it can run underneath and contaminate the mirrors and lenses. Do not use chemically treated cloths or cleaners containing alcohol, benzene or ammonia, which can discolour or melt the case, and do not lubricate the scanner.[1] Apple's service charts start blurred or streaked images with a wipe of the glass using a soft dry cloth, then a check of the white plate under the glass and of the mirrors for dust.[2][3]
Optical assembly
[edit | edit source]The optical assembly carries the xenon lamp, two mirrors and the CCD board. Apple warned its service staff that assemblies were being damaged during removal. Lift the assembly only by its long sides. The CCD board on the short front side is delicate, and touching it or the mirrors can leave the scanner not working.[2] Dust on the mirrors shows as black arcs on 600/27 scans; Apple's advice was to have the optical assembly cleaned by a service provider.[5] The lamp is part of the optical assembly and is not sold separately. Apple rated it for 100,000 scans or five years.[6]
Moving the optical assembly to the service position
[edit | edit source]To reach parts under the carriage, Apple moves it with the SCSI ID switch:[2]
- Remove the top cover with hinge. Leave the power cord connected, switch the scanner off and disconnect the SCSI cable.
- Set the SCSI ID switch to 7 (termination off position) and switch on. Wait for the start-up sequence to finish and the lamp to go out.
- Set the switch to 0 (termination on position), then back to 7, back to 0 and finally back to 7.
- The optical unit moves. Switch off when the mirror is between the set of four screws on the bottom.
SCSI settings
[edit | edit source]The scanner has built-in termination and two SCSI connectors. The ID selector between the connectors has two sets of numbers: black for termination off, used when an external terminator is fitted, and red for termination on. The factory setting is ID 2 with termination on.[7][2] Do not give the scanner ID 0 or 7. A Macintosh IIfx needs its special terminator with the scanner's termination off, and a PowerBook needs an external terminator; other Macintosh models need no external terminator when the scanner is the only or last device.[1] If the selector's label is misaligned, set it to 12 o'clock and count clicks clockwise.[8] Always switch the scanner on before the Macintosh.[1]
Document feeder
[edit | edit source]Clean the feeder with a wrung-out damp cloth and dry it, as for the scanner. If the delivery guide sheet under the feeder gets dirty, or vertical black lines appear in feeder scans, wipe both sides of the sheet with a soft dry cloth. The delivery guide sheet and the paper separator are both user-replaceable: a separator that keeps feeding two sheets or none needs replacing.[1] The service parts are the delivery guide sheet 922-2048, paper separator 922-2047 and deflector 922-2049.[2] Before using the feeder, check the glass is clear, or the scan comes out blank or striped.[9]
Transparent Media Adapter (1200/30)
[edit | edit source]The adapter's diffuser, its smooth underside, scratches easily and scratches show in every film scan. Clean it only with a dry, soft cloth and light pressure, never with alcohol, benzene or ammonia cleaners. Keep staples and clips away from it when scanning paper with the adapter fitted.[1]
