Apple Color OneScanner General Maintenance

The parts of the Apple Color OneScanner that need attention are the glass, the fluorescent lamp, the drive belt and gears, and the fuses. Apple's service procedures for the two revisions differ mainly in how the lamp is reached.[1][2] Faults are diagnosed on the Apple Color OneScanner Troubleshooting Guide.
Warning: the scanner runs from the mains, and the transformer and power supply board are live while it is plugged in. Unplug it before removing any cover. The lamp is a glass fluorescent tube.
Cleaning the glass
[edit | edit source]Apple's first cure for dark or light spots, or for a wrong image on screen, is to clean the glass with water and a soft, lint-free cloth.[1][2] Cleaning the glass is also Apple's first cure for the two-flash lamp error.[1][3]
Lamp
[edit | edit source]The right lamp
[edit | edit source]The Color OneScanner uses a white colour lamp. The grey-scale OneScanner's 8-bit lamp fits but gives the light a green cast, and the scanner then flashes a single error light. If the lamp looks green, the wrong one is fitted.[1]
Revision A
[edit | edit source]Revision A has a lamp access door on the right side.[4] Apple's procedure:[1]
- Lift the cover to the vertical position.
- Switch the scanner on and then off, to send the optical assembly to its home position.
- Unscrew the lamp lock button with a coin or flat-blade screwdriver.
- Pull the wire handle and unscrew the lamp assembly retaining screw, then draw the lamp assembly out.
- Push the lamp carefully out of its socket.
When refitting, wipe the new lamp with a soft cloth so it is free of fingerprints, fit it with the printing facing the lamp assembly, seat the assembly in the left retaining flanges with the wire handle down, and tighten the lamp lock button. The lock button also operates the interlock switches, so a loose button leaves the scanner dead: Apple's first checks for "power lamp not on" are the power cord and closing the lamp cover and turning the button clockwise.[1]
Revision B
[edit | edit source]Revision B has no access door. Remove the top cover and the glass cover assembly, then push the lamp carefully out of the optical assembly. The same refitting notes apply: no fingerprints, printing towards the lamp assembly, assembly seated in the left retaining flanges.[2]
Drive belt and gears
[edit | edit source]If the optical assembly does not move, Apple's chart has the belt checked, cleaned or replaced, and the belt tension checked: it should be tight with no slack. Look for damaged gears or a build-up of foreign material and clean or replace them. A carrier shaft that is bent also stops the carriage.[1][2] The drive belt assembly is service part 076-0323 on both revisions.[1][2]
Fuses
[edit | edit source]| Fuse | Rating | Type | Revision |
|---|---|---|---|
| FU1 | 2 A | Fire-rated ceramic | A and B |
| FU2 | 1 A | Glass | A |
| FU3 | 3 A | Glass | A |
On Revision A, reach FU1 by pushing in the tabs and removing the AC switch cover. Reach FU2 and FU3 by lifting the centre of the left guide rail housing off the left guide rail.[1] On Revision B, remove the top cover and glass cover assembly first, then the AC switch cover, to reach FU1.[2] Always refit a fuse of the same rating and type. The logic board also has a fuse, which Apple's chart checks when scans do not reach the computer.[1][2]
Voltage selection
[edit | edit source]The universal model has a voltage selector under a screwed cover. Remove the screw and cover, turn the selector with a coin or flat-blade screwdriver to match the supply, and fit the fuse for the new setting.[1] A US 110 V scanner has no selector. It can be converted by replacing its transformer and bracket plate assembly with the universal transformer and bracket plate assembly; leave the bracket on the transformer when removing it, and set the selector before switching on.[1] The transformers are service parts 915-0038 (110 V) and 915-0039 (100-240 V).[1]
