Apple PC 5.25 Drive General Maintenance

Taking apart and reassembling the Apple PC 5.25 Drive, with Apple's parts list. The drive has no power supply of its own and no adjustments in Apple's documents: Apple serviced it by exchanging the drive mechanism, the cable and the case parts. General floppy drive care is on Floppy Drive Repair.[1][2]
Before you start
[edit | edit source]Switch the Macintosh off and unplug the drive's cable from the controller card's DB-37 connector before working on the drive; it draws its power from the computer. You need a #2 Phillips screwdriver and a flat-blade screwdriver.[1]
Case
[edit | edit source]Removal:[1]
- Prise the disk insertion lever away from the drive with a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Turn the drive upside down and remove the six Phillips screws.
- Hold the case together and turn the drive back over.
- Holding the bottom cover, lift the back of the top cover, pull it slightly forward and up until it clears the inside of the drive.
- Slip the cable out of the slot in the back of the bottom cover and lift the drive out.
Refitting: place the drive in the bottom cover and route the cable behind it and out of the case, with the cable grommet seated in the cut-out. Fit the hole in the top cover over the disk lever post, close the case and turn it over. The two longer 5/8-inch screws go in the positions marked 1 in Apple's figure and the four 5/16-inch screws in the others. Push the disk insertion lever back onto its post.[1]
Shield cover and cable
[edit | edit source]With the case off, remove the two screws holding the shield cover to the shield case, lift the cover up and back from the front, remove the screw holding the cable ground strap to the shield case, and disconnect the bus connector from J1 and the power connector from J2. To refit, connect J1 and J2, refit the ground strap screw, line up the tabs at the back of the shield cover with the cut-outs in the shield case, snap the cover into place and refit its two screws.[1][2]
Drive mechanism
[edit | edit source]With the case, shield cover and cable removed, four Phillips screws hold the mechanism in the shield case. Lift it out; refit it with the same four screws.[1]
