PowerBook Duo Dock Service Source
Appearance
The PowerBook Duo Dock Service Source is Apple's service manual for the PowerBook Duo Dock, Duo Dock II and Duo Dock Plus. This copy is a 121-page PDF created on 19 January 1996. Each chapter restarts its own page numbering, so the page numbers below are PDF pages.[1] The PowerBook Duo computers and the Duo Floppy Adapter are covered by the PowerBook Duo 200 Series Service Source, and the Duo MiniDock by the PowerBook Duo MiniDock Service Source; this manual refers the reader to both.[1]

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Power supply check (p. 36): when the dock ticks and gives no raster, pin 5 (yellow) of the power supply to logic board cable should read 5 V ±0.5 V and pin 7 (blue) 20 V ±0.5 V. Outside those limits, replace the supply.
- Power supply ratings (p. 23): Duo Dock 85-270 V AC, Duo Dock II and Duo Dock Plus 90-270 V AC; 47-63 Hz; 75 W continuous, 85 W surge.
- Manual eject (p. 53): with no power, push the dock key or a small screwdriver into the square hole on the side of the dock.
- Hard drive jumper (p. 108): Apple's 230 MB drive ships as SCSI ID 0 and needs a jumper at A0 to become ID 1 in the dock. Remove the SCSI terminator from J8 before connecting the drive (p. 111).
- VRAM (p. 97): the original Duo Dock takes one 512K VRAM SIMM in J9, 100 ns or faster. The Duo Dock II cannot be expanded.
- Hard drives that do not spin up (pp. 31-32): mismatched HD SC Setup versions, thousands of colours and 32-bit addressing together can stop a docked Duo starting from its own drive. Apple's cures are HD SC Setup 7.2.2 or later on both drives, or 256 colours, or 32-bit addressing off.
- Service part numbers (p. 121): logic boards 661-1657 (Duo Dock), 661-1707 (Duo Dock II), 661-0975 (Duo Dock Plus); power supply 661-1660; release mechanism 922-0336; NuBus adapter 922-0102.
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No schematics, no board layouts and no component values. There is no capacitor list for the power supply or the logic board; see Apple PowerBook Duo Dock Capacitor Replacement Guide for the community lists.
- The power supply is a whole-unit exchange part. The manual does not open it.
- No coverage of the Duo computers, the Floppy Adapter or the MiniDock.
