The Power Macintosh 6300 is a desktop Macintosh with a PowerPC 603e processor in the low-profile case of the Macintosh Quadra 630. Apple's specification pages list two models: the Power Macintosh 6300/120, introduced on June 27, 1996, and the Power Macintosh 6300/160, introduced on October 1, 1996.[1][2] EveryMac says the 6300/120 was sold only in Asia, with order number M4975J/A and model number M3076, and that the consumer version, the Macintosh Performa 6320CD, was sold worldwide.[3] The two models differ: Apple lists an LC processor-direct slot and 72-pin SIMMs for the 6300/120, and a PCI slot and 168-pin DIMMs for the 6300/160, as on the Macintosh Performa 6360.[1][2]

Hardware and service

Apple's Performa 6200/6300 Series Service Source covers the Performa versions of both boards: the Performa 6300CD (100 MHz) and 6320CD (120 MHz) on the 6200-style board, and the Performa 6360 (160 MHz) with PCI and DIMMs.[4] Its figures for the non-6360 machines are a 1 MB DRAM frame buffer, 4 MB ROM, 256K level-2 cache, 100–240 V AC at 47–63 Hz and 125 W, 2.5 A; for the 6360 it gives 90–270 V AC at 43–67 Hz and 150 W (pp. 26–42).[4] The manual's 125 W for the Performa 6300CD and 6320CD compares with 55 W on Apple's 6300/120 specification page.

The manual also covers the Power Macintosh 5300/6300 Logic Board Upgrade, a finished-goods kit with a 603e 100 MHz logic board and fence. Apple notes that the 603e processor on a 6300-series board may have to come off to install or service SIMMs (pp. 121–124).[4] The 6320 and 6360 boards have a reset button, in a different place on each, pressed with a flat plastic tool (pp. 168–169).[4]

The clock battery is a pack on a plug and a hook-and-loop base; Apple's test is to replace it below 3.0 V on the 10 V DC range (pp. 164–167), and the specification pages give it as 4.5 V alkaline.[4][1] Alkaline leakage is caustic; neutralise it with a mild acid such as white vinegar. See Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.

Apple's symptom charts and the family's known faults are on Macintosh Performa 6300CD, Macintosh Performa 6320CD and Macintosh Performa 6360.
