The Macintosh Performa 5200 is the base model of Apple's Performa 5200 series, an all-in-one Macintosh personal computer introduced in April 1995. The Performa 5200 did not include a CD-ROM drive and was not widely sold; the Performa 5200CD was the primary consumer model.
The Performa 5200 shares the same chassis, logic board, and specifications as the rest of the 5200 series:
- Performa 5200CD – Primary North American consumer model with CD-ROM
- Performa 5210CD – Asia/Europe model
- Performa 5215CD – North American model with different software bundle
- Performa 5220CD – Asia/Europe model

A note on the published weight. Apple's Power Macintosh/Performa 5200 and 5300 Service Source prints "Without CD-ROM: 17 lb. With CD-ROM: 19 lb. (21.15 kg)" — figures that contradict each other, since 19 lb is 8.6 kg. 17 lb and 19 lb are the weights Apple publishes for the desktop Performa 6200/6300, and appear to have been carried into the 5200 manual by mistake; 21.15 kg is the figure consistent with a 15-inch all-in-one. The metric figure is the one used here.[1][2]

Apple's Repair Extension Program
[edit | edit source]The 5200 and 6200 families are the Macintoshes most often written about second-hand, and the folklore has drifted a long way from what Apple actually documented. Apple ran a genuine Repair Extension Program for system freezes and for sudden changes in video colour hue on the Power Macintosh/Performa 52xx and 53xx (except the 5260 and 5280). The checks are specific and you can make them yourself.[1]

A "Version B" logic board is identified by a B at the end of the serial number printed on the board near the communications port.[1]
Apple also required the EMI clips to be replaced on any machine where the logic board was not being replaced, because the clips prevent damage to the board when expansion cards are fitted.[1]
Two cautions that follow from Apple's own wording:
- A consistent colour cast is not the RGB cable. Apple says that if the monitor still shows a consistent hue after the internal RGB cable has been replaced, the analogue board is the part at fault.[1]
- Type 11 errors are not this fault. Apple explicitly directs those to a clean install of system software or a third-party software update, not to a board swap.[1]
Open Transport 1.1 does not work on these machines; they require 1.1.1. If installing 1.1.1 raises a dialogue saying a hardware issue was detected, that is Open Transport refusing to install until the cache/ROM DIMM is replaced — the repair covered by the programme above.[1]
