What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Processors (Specifications pp. 1-2): Centris 610 68LC040 at 20 MHz, and Apple states that it provides no FPU upgrade for it; Quadra 610 "optional" 68LC040 or 68040 at 25 MHz; Workgroup Server 60 68040 at 25 MHz; Quadra 610 DOS Compatible 68LC040 at 25 MHz plus a 486SX DOS card with its own 72-pin SIMM slot (up to 64 MB) and 512K of video DRAM.
  • Memory: 4 or 8 MB standard (8 MB on the WS 60), 68 MB maximum, 80 ns 72-pin SIMMs; 1 MB ROM.
  • Electrical (p. 11): 100-240 V AC, 50-60 Hz, 112 W not including the monitor. Used on Macintosh Quadra 610 and Macintosh Centris 610.
  • Battery verification (Additional Procedures p. 2): replace the battery below 3.2 V on the 10 V DC range.
  • CPU replacement (pp. 6-9): the socketed PGA processor is lifted with a chip removal tool; Apple warns that pressing down on the tool's handle can damage the board and that forcing the processor into the socket can bend pins.
  • Upgrades: the Centris 660AV logic board kit (the "Centris 610AV Upgrade Kit" for the Centris 610), the Power Macintosh Card in the PDS, and the Power Mac upgrade to a Power Macintosh 6100/60 or 6100/60AV (Workgroup Server 6150 for the WS 60).
  • Exploded-view part numbers: logic boards 661-0042 (no FPU), 661-0043 (FPU), 661-1681 and 661-1682 (with Ethernet); power supply 661-1688; PDS or NuBus adapter 661-1718; floppy drives 661-0121 and 661-0474.

Misprints in this manual

[edit | edit source]
  • The Memory page (p. 4) prints its labels one line out of step with the values: read PRAM as 256 bytes, VRAM as 512K expandable to 1 MB, and the clock/calendar as the CMOS chip with lithium battery.
  • The Physical page (p. 12) gives the depth as "4.2 in. (107 mm)". Apple's technical specifications for the Quadra 610 give 15.6 in, and the Centris 610 developer note gives 397 mm.[1]

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No schematics, no component-level parts list and no component values.
  • No Adjustments chapter and no rail tolerances.
  • No error-chord or miscellaneous symptom charts; the Troubleshooting chapter ends with the peripheral charts.
  • No DOS card troubleshooting or take-apart beyond the specifications.
