PowerBook 165c and 180c Service Source
Appearance
Apple's PowerBook 165c/180c Service Source is the service manual for the two colour models of the PowerBook 100 series, the passive-matrix PowerBook 165c and the active-matrix PowerBook 180c. The hosted copy has 150 pages; the PDF was created in December 1995 and modified in May 1998. Page numbers below are PDF pages.[1] The greyscale 160, 165 and 180 have their own manual, PowerBook 160, 165 and 180 Service Source.

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- Each model has its own display, inverter, display cable and inverter cable, and Apple warns that they are not interchangeable: 165c display 661-0752, inverter 922-0374, display cable 922-0373, inverter cable 922-0566; 180c display 661-0686, inverter 922-0378, display cable 922-0380, inverter cable 922-0412 (p. 4).
- Both models have a 33 MHz 68030 and a 68882 FPU, 4 MB of PSRAM expandable to 14 MB with 85 ns or faster cards, and 512K of video RAM (pp. 8-10).
- The 165c screen is a 9 in (230 mm) colour FSTN panel and the 180c screen an 8.4 in active-matrix panel, both showing 256 colours (p. 15).
- The PRAM battery is a 3 V, 30 mAh rechargeable lithium cell, the NiCad main battery gives 1.5-2 hours, and the adapter is rated 24 W (p. 16).
- A 180c that powers on and then off when the screen lights is on the wrong adapter: it needs the 24 W M5652 (p. 30).
- The DC/DC converter carries a shield that must not be removed. A replacement converter needs a new shield, 922-0418; do not reuse the old one (pp. 71, 74).
- The cousin card and daughterboard must be separated with Apple's logic board take-apart tool; rocking or peeling them apart damages the connectors (pp. 84, 86).
- The 180c's active-matrix display is a CPRC and international part. Apple does not replace a 180c display for subpixel faults, which it accepts in a panel of 921,000 transistors (pp. 39, 117).
- A battery should read above 5.7 V and an adapter 7.5-7.9 V (pp. 146, 148).
What this manual does not contain
[edit | edit source]- No schematics and no component values.
- No backup battery replacement procedure, and no procedure for the 180c's backlight lamps.
- No list of capacitors; see PowerBook 180 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
