PowerBook 550c Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Macintosh PowerBook 550c Service Source is Apple's service manual for the PowerBook 550c, the Japan-only member of the PowerBook 500 series. This copy is a 175-page PDF created on 15 November 1995; its cover reads "This product is for Japan only". Each chapter restarts its own page numbering, so the page numbers below are PDF pages.[1] The 520, 520c, 540 and 540c are covered by the PowerBook 500 Series Service Source, which does not mention the 550c.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Power manager reset (p. 168): remove the adapter and battery, wait 3 to 5 minutes, hold Control, Command, Option and Power On together for 5 to 10 seconds, refit the battery and switch on.
  • Battery (pp. 169-170): about 10.8 V fully charged and 7.8 V fully discharged on the 10 V DC range; a pack stored out of the computer may fall to 5.0 V.
  • Backup battery (pp. 171-172): rechargeable; leave the machine on the adapter for 48 hours to recharge it.
  • AC adapter (p. 173): pins 1 (VBATT) and 2 (VMAIN) 16.4 to 16.6 V; pins 3 and 4 ground and ground sense, measured against the connector shell.
  • A machine that will not power up gets, after the adapter and battery checks, a new motherboard fuse, part 922-1116 (pp. 33, 100-101, 175).
  • Clicking when the lid is closed (p. 56): refit the centre base cover with the screw nearest the SCSI port first.
  • Service parts (p. 175) include the daughterboard 661-0982, display 661-0983, inverter board 922-1445, main battery 661-0055, backup battery 922-0786, Japanese keyboard J661-1001 and power adapter 922-0825.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No schematics and no component values; capacitor lists from MacDat are given on PowerBook 550c.
  • No coverage of the other 500-series models, although it states that the 550c uses the same cables as the 520 and 540 (p. 8).
