Workgroup Server 9150 Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Workgroup Server 9150 Service Source is Apple's 130-page module-level service manual for the Apple Workgroup Server 9150 and Workgroup Server 9150/120. The PDF was distilled from FrameMaker on 13 December 1995. Page numbers below are PDF pages.[1]

It covers specifications, symptom charts, take-apart and upgrade procedures, battery checks and an exploded view with part numbers. It has no schematics and no component values.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Processor and memory (pp. 13-15): PowerPC 601 at 80 MHz (system software 7.1.2 or later) or 120 MHz (7.5 or later); soldered DRAM plus eight 72-pin SIMM sockets to 264 MB, in pairs, 80 ns or faster, non-composite; 4 MB ROM on a SIMM; no VRAM; 512K or 1 MB level-2 cache SIMM.
  • Electrical (p. 23): 100-240 V AC, 50-60 Hz; 600 W maximum input; 303 W DC output.
  • The Power Macintosh video slot must hold a terminator card if no video card is fitted (p. 19).
  • The 9150/120 board has a thermoelectric cooler on the processor heatsink that must not be unplugged (p. 8), and needs the processor fan under the power supply; fitting the board without the fan damages it (pp. 80, 86-88, 117).
  • A fault confined to the 80 MHz model: hangs, I/O errors or "mirrors out of sync" during heavy SCSI activity, cured by fitting logic board 661-0993 (p. 52).
  • Battery (pp. 119-120): measure on the 10 V DC range with the cover off; replace below 3.2 V.
  • Logic-board reset (pp. 124-128): unplug, disconnect the power supply cable from the board, remove the battery, press the power button, wait 5-10 minutes.
  • Exploded-view part numbers (p. 130): logic board 661-0210 and 661-0993; power supply 661-0664; floppy drive 661-0121; CD-ROM drive 661-0913; tape drive 661-0039; fan 720-0518; five-drive SCSI data cable 922-0762; keyswitch 705-0175.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No schematics, no component-level parts list and no capacitor values.
  • No power supply output voltages or tolerances.
  • No adjustments chapter.
  • Its own figures conflict on the soldered memory: the specifications give 8 MB (9150) and 16 MB (9150/120), while the logic-board drawings on pp. 5 and 7 label them the other way round.
  • The height is printed as 16.8 in (473 mm); 473 mm is 18.6 in (p. 24).
