Verify against Apple's Macintosh IIvx/IIvi/Performa 600 Service Source (hosted): DELETED 'Input Voltage 100V-240V AC' - that is the rating of the switched MONITOR OUTLET on the back; Apple prints the machine's own A/C line input as 100-120 VAC, a domestic-only figure, so a 220-240 V machine is a different supply and its primary-side parts are not interchangeable; DELETED '230 W maximum' (that is the Macintosh IIfx figure) and gave Apple's three real numbers - 200 W AC input, 3 A max at the ou...
Rewrite from IIvx developer note, Service Source and Macworld reviews; add Apple PSU ratings table, slot power budgets, SCSI termination; fix 230 MB price (US$3,319 not $3,549), cover and PSU facts; remove Wikipedia-only history and the "100-120 V means a different 240 V supply" claim (DN: 85-270 V auto)

The IIvx was introduced alongside the slower Macintosh IIvi. Both models use the same high-profile desktop case. == History ==

Macworld reported in April 1993 that the IIvx belonged to Apple's new Centris mid-range line, but that Apple's lawyers had not finished the trademark check on the Centris name before it was released; Apple said it would not rename it. The 68040 Macintosh Centris 650 arrived in the same case in February 1993, and Apple cut the IIvx's base price from US$2,949 to US$1,899. Low End Mac found the IIvx slower than the Macintosh IIci, because its 32 MHz processor runs on a 16 MHz bus.
Development History
The IIvx began as a proof-of-concept to demonstrate how an internal CD-ROM drive could be added to a Macintosh. After Apple CEO John Sculley announced a Mac with CD-ROM at MacWorld Tokyo, the IIvx was rushed into production with several design compromises.

Apple originally intended the IIvx to be the first Macintosh Centris, but trademark clearance was not completed in time. The Centris name debuted a few months later with 68040-based models.

Architecture and Processor
The Macintosh IIvx uses a Motorola MC68030 microprocessor running at 32 MHz, paired with a Motorola 68882 FPU.

* Clock Speed: 32 MHz
* Bus Speed: 16 MHz
* Data Path: 32-bit
* L1 Cache: 0.5 KB (on-chip)
* L2 Cache: 32 KB
* FPU: Motorola 68882 @ 32 MHz (included)

The 32 MHz CPU runs on a 16 MHz bus, which limits performance. The IIvx is slightly slower than the older Macintosh IIci in many benchmarks despite the higher clock speed. Apple's specification for the serial ports is 230.4 Kbaud maximum, or 0.92 Mbit/s with an external clock source. A 57.6 kbit/s limit was previously stated here and is not Apple's figure; the MIDI difficulty on these machines is a clocking problem rather than a ceiling on the port's rate, and no source for a specific number has been found.

The 32K L2 cache distinguishes the IIvx from the IIvi and Performa 600, which lack L2 cache.

Power
Power — Apple's figures, and the trap in them
Apple's Electrical specification for the IIvi, IIvx and Performa 600 is in three parts, and
they are easy to conflate:

* A/C line input: 100–120 VAC, 200 W
* A/C line output receptacle: 100–240 VAC, 3 A maximum — this is the switched monitor
  outlet on the back, not the machine's own input
* DC power: 112 W maximum

"Input voltage 100–240 V AC" was previously given here. That is the output receptacle's
rating. Apple prints the machine's own line input as 100–120 VAC — a domestic figure — so
a 220–240 V IIvx is a different supply, and its primary-side parts are not interchangeable with a
110 V one. Check which board is in front of you before ordering primary-side capacitors.

"230 W maximum" was also previously given here and is not Apple's figure for any part of this
machine: 200 W is the AC input rating and 112 W the DC output. 230 W is the Macintosh IIfx
figure.

Apple publishes no rail tolerance and no power-supply adjustment for this machine.

Battery
3.6 V ½AA lithium; Apple's instruction is to replace it below 2.8 V — measured
on the 10 V DC range. 2.8 V is the IIcx / IIci / IIvi / IIvx / Quadra 700 / SE / SE-30 figure;
3.0 V and 3.2 V belong to other machines and get transplanted between them. Lithium leakage is
neutralised with bicarbonate of soda, not vinegar.

Case Design
The IIvx uses a high-profile desktop case shared with the Macintosh IIvi, Performa 600, Macintosh Centris 650, Macintosh Quadra 650, and Power Macintosh 7100. The case design continued through the PowerPC era. The logic board can be swapped with a Centris/Quadra 650 board for an upgrade.

* Dimensions: 6.0" H × 13.0" W × 16.5" D (15.2 × 33 × 41.9 cm)
* Weight: 25 lbs (11.3 kg)

Hardware
Logic board
The VASP chip combines video, memory mapping, sound, clock generation and glue logic, and is similar to the V8 of the Macintosh LC. A 68HC05 microcontroller, as in the Macintosh IIsi, runs ADB, the clock, parameter RAM and soft power. Apple's logic board part is 661-0759 for the IIvx (661-0760 IIvi, 661-0761 Performa 600).

Identification
Because RAM is tested and sized before video starts, the screen stays blank for a while at start-up, longer with more RAM fitted. The IIvx does not support 1-bit mode on Apple's 12-inch RGB monitor.
{| class="wikitable styled-table" style="width:60%;"

Accelerator slot
The 120-pin slot is for accelerator cards, much like the IIci cache slot. Apple warns that it is not compatible with processor-direct cards for other Macintosh models; the connector is the same but the signals differ, and fitting one may damage the card and the computer. Cards must stay within 5 W. A IIvx could be upgraded to a Centris 650 by exchanging the logic board, and Apple's Service Source refers the Power Macintosh 7100 upgrade to the 7100 manual.

SCSI and CD-ROM
An active terminator on the logic board terminates the internal bus when no external device is attached, and switches off when a terminated external device is connected. The 3.5-inch hard drive must be terminated; a device in the 5.25-inch bay must not be. Apple's internal CD-ROM uses SCSI ID 3, and its audio goes to a four-pin connector on the logic board. Apple's parts list shows AppleCD 300, 300i and 600i drives.

Power supply
Apple part 661-0758, the same as the Centris 650's. Apple Rescue of Denver lists it as Apple 614-0009, 112 W, made by Delta (SMP-120EB) or Astec (AA16870). Its 80 mm fan cools the whole machine.

The Macintosh IIvx is a desktop Macintosh introduced by Apple on 19 October 1992 and discontinued on 21 October 1993.[1] It is the faster version of the Performa 600: the same case and basic logic board, with a 68882 FPU and a 32K cache soldered to the board. Macworld measured it 25 to 35 per cent faster than the Performa 600.[2] With the Performa 600 it was the first Macintosh in a metal case and the first with a built-in CD-ROM drive; the case and power supply were used again for the Centris 650, Quadra 650 and Power Macintosh 7100.[3][4] Apple's service manual and developer note cover it with the Macintosh IIvi and Performa 600.[5][6]

History

[edit | edit source]

Macworld reported in April 1993 that the IIvx belonged to Apple's new Centris mid-range line, but that Apple's lawyers had not finished the trademark check on the Centris name before it was released; Apple said it would not rename it.[7] The 68040 Macintosh Centris 650 arrived in the same case in February 1993, and Apple cut the IIvx's base price from US$2,949 to US$1,899.[4] Low End Mac found the IIvx slower than the Macintosh IIci, because its 32 MHz processor runs on a 16 MHz bus.[4]

Specifications

Hardware

Logic board

[edit | edit source]

The VASP chip combines video, memory mapping, sound, clock generation and glue logic, and is similar to the V8 of the Macintosh LC. A 68HC05 microcontroller, as in the Macintosh IIsi, runs ADB, the clock, parameter RAM and soft power.[6] Apple's logic board part is 661-0759 for the IIvx (661-0760 IIvi, 661-0761 Performa 600).[5]

Because RAM is tested and sized before video starts, the screen stays blank for a while at start-up, longer with more RAM fitted.[6] The IIvx does not support 1-bit mode on Apple's 12-inch RGB monitor.[6]

Accelerator slot

[edit | edit source]

The 120-pin slot is for accelerator cards, much like the IIci cache slot. Apple warns that it is not compatible with processor-direct cards for other Macintosh models; the connector is the same but the signals differ, and fitting one may damage the card and the computer. Cards must stay within 5 W.[6] A IIvx could be upgraded to a Centris 650 by exchanging the logic board, and Apple's Service Source refers the Power Macintosh 7100 upgrade to the 7100 manual.[5]

SCSI and CD-ROM

[edit | edit source]

An active terminator on the logic board terminates the internal bus when no external device is attached, and switches off when a terminated external device is connected. The 3.5-inch hard drive must be terminated; a device in the 5.25-inch bay must not be. Apple's internal CD-ROM uses SCSI ID 3, and its audio goes to a four-pin connector on the logic board.[6] Apple's parts list shows AppleCD 300, 300i and 600i drives.[5]

Power supply

[edit | edit source]

Apple part 661-0758, the same as the Centris 650's.[5] Apple Rescue of Denver lists it as Apple 614-0009, 112 W, made by Delta (SMP-120EB) or Astec (AA16870).[3] Its 80 mm fan cools the whole machine.[6]

Power supply ratings (Apple developer note, Table 1-12)
Load +5 V +5 V trickle +12 V -12 V Total
Minimum 1.5 A 0 A 200 mA 0 A 9.9 W
Maximum 15 A 1 mA 2.5 A 600 mA 112 W
Peak 15 A 1 mA 6 A (12 s maximum) 600 mA 130 W

The trickle output is live whenever the machine is plugged in and runs the clock, parameter RAM and the ADB power-on circuit; the +12 V peak rating covers every internal drive spinning up at once.[6] Apple publishes no rail tolerances and no adjustment.[5]

Battery

[edit | edit source]

A 3.6 V lithium cell keeps the clock and PRAM when the machine is unplugged.[1][6] Apple's test: measure on the 10 V DC range, positive probe on the end marked "+" on the logic board, and replace the battery below 2.8 V.[5] See Macintosh IIvx General Maintenance.

Capacitors

[edit | edit source]

The IIvi board Recap-a-Mac documents has six 47 µF 16 V surface-mount electrolytics and two 220 µF 16 V axials, and Console5 sells one logic board kit for the IIvx, IIvi and Performa 600. See Macintosh IIvx Capacitor Replacement Guide.[8]
