Apple's PowerBook 3400c/PowerBook G3 Service Source is the service manual for the PowerBook 3400c/180, 3400c/200 and 3400c/240 and for the first PowerBook G3, which uses the same case. The hosted copy has 210 pages and was last modified in August 1999. Page numbers below are PDF pages.[1] MacDat hosts an earlier 205-page edition (modified March 1998).[2]

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Some 3400 display cables worked loose from the logic board, leaving no picture or backlight; the cure is a brightness and speaker grill (922-2488) with a foam gasket over the connector (pp. 7-8).
  • Shutdowns on battery when the machine is jostled are cured by a battery bay gasket, kit 076-0706 (pp. 8-9, 204-207).
  • The backup battery is a 60 mAh rechargeable NiMH pack stuck to the underside of the brightness and speaker grill (pp. 41, 100).
  • The main battery is lithium-ion with an optional NiMH pack; a 3400 battery fits a 5300 or 190 but is not charged there (pp. 23-25).
  • There is no voltage test for the battery or the adapter; the battery is checked with its indicator lights (pp. 196-197).
  • The clutch-screw test with a floppy disk, and the warning that the display cable tears if its screw hole is misaligned with the clutch (pp. 162-163).

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No schematics, no component-level parts list and no capacitor values.
  • Nothing on the PowerBook G3 Series (Wallstreet) and later models.
