PowerBook G3 Series Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The PowerBook G3 Series Service Source is Apple's service manual for the second-generation PowerBook G3, family number M4753, known as "Wallstreet" and, in its later configurations, "Wallstreet II" or "PDQ". This copy is a 236-page PDF created on 4 May 1998 and last modified on 2 August 1999. Its configuration tables cover the models of May, September and October 1998. Each chapter restarts its own page numbering, so the page numbers below are PDF pages.[1] The family is described on PowerBook G3.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Board part numbers and ID codes (pp. 4-5, 28): processor boards 661-2035 (233 MHz, no cache), 661-2089 (233 MHz, 512K), 661-2036 (250 MHz, 1 MB), 661-2097 (266 MHz, 1 MB), 661-2021 (292 MHz, 1 MB) and 661-2088 (300 MHz, 1 MB); I/O logic boards 661-2058, 661-2094, 661-2087 and 661-2019.
  • Board compatibility (p. 30): the early processor boards (661-2021, -2035, -2036) do not work with I/O board 661-2087, and the later ones (661-2088, -2089, -2097) work only with 661-2087.
  • Intermittent vertical lines, flicker or a screen fading to white on 13.3-inch models is the internal display cable, not the logic board or display (pp. 8-9).
  • A partly seated processor board still runs, but works loose with heat and causes intermittent faults; press it home a second time (pp. 26-27).
  • Power manager reset (p. 231): with the machine shut down, press Shift-Fn-Control-Power together, wait five seconds, then press Power. Apple repeats this three or four times when the sleep LED stays lit (p. 61).
  • The backup battery takes about 48 hours on the adapter to recharge (pp. 228-229). Apple gives no test for the power adapter beyond trying another (p. 227).
  • An EMI shield touching the adapter plug's outer shield stops the battery charging while the machine runs (pp. 66-67).
