The Performa 5260 series replaced the PowerPC 603 CPU with the improved 603e. The system shares its logic board and form factor with the education-market Power Macintosh 5260/100 and various regional variants sold under different model numbers.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Macintosh_5260 |title=Power Macintosh 5260 |publisher=Wikipedia |access-date=2026-02-10}}</ref>

== Model Variants ==

The Performa 5260 family includes several regional and speed variants:
Apple's technical specifications give 8 MB as the minimum RAM, an 800 MB hard drive and a 4× CD-ROM drive; the ''Service Source'' gives 16 MB as the minimum for the whole family.<ref name="apple" /><ref name="ss5260" />

The official Apple Service Source documentation covers both the Power Macintosh 5260 and Performa 5260/5280 series.
The processor-direct slot takes many cards made for the Macintosh LC, but Apple says it is not a true PDS: cards that work with the main processor, such as cache or FPU cards, do not work (p. 11).<ref name="ss5260" /> A Cuda microcontroller handles soft power, resets, PRAM, ADB and the real-time clock; Apple says many system problems clear after pressing the Cuda reset button on the logic board (pp. 21, 178).<ref name="ss5260" />

All Apple Service Manuals can be found on the [[:Category:Apple Service Source|Apple Service Source]] page.
The PRAM battery connects to the logic board by a plug and sits on hook-and-loop tape. Apple's test is to replace it below 3.0 V (pp. 174–177); Apple's technical specifications give the battery type as 4.5 V alkaline.<ref name="ss5260" /><ref name="apple" />

== Capacitor Replacement Guide ==
== Adjustments ==
Apple's adjustments for the 5260 and 5280 are light meter setup, geometry, video and power supply. Apple requires the power-supply adjustment whenever the analogue board or power supply is taken out: connect a DC voltmeter between the metal chassis and pin 3 of P805 on the power supply, and set R828 for 110 V DC (pp. 213–214).<ref name="ss5260" /> The 5200 series high-voltage adjustment (29.5 V at D713 or D703) does not apply.<ref name="ss52" />

Detailed capacitor replacement guidelines for the logic board can be found on the [[Macintosh Performa 5260CD Capacitor Replacement Guide]] page.

The Macintosh Performa 5260CD is an all-in-one Macintosh with a 100 MHz PowerPC 603e and a built-in 14-inch monitor. Apple gives its introduction date as April 15, 1996, with System 7.5.3 as the original system software.[1] It is the Performa version of the Power Macintosh 5260/100, which Apple covers with the 5260/120 and 5280 in one service manual.[2] EveryMac gives April 22, 1996 for the introduction and February 1, 1997 for the discontinuation, a price of US$1,900 and model number M3457, and says it was sold worldwide with an 800 MB or 1.2 GB hard drive and 8 or 16 MB of RAM.[3] The Performa 5270CD is the same machine for markets outside the US.

Apple's technical specifications give 8 MB as the minimum RAM, an 800 MB hard drive and a 4× CD-ROM drive; the Service Source gives 16 MB as the minimum for the whole family.[1][2]

The 5260 looks like the 5200 series but its logic board (661-1116 at 100 MHz, 661-1265 at 120 MHz), power supply board (661-1133), analogue/video board (661-1134) and CRT (661-1135) all have different part numbers from the 5200's (p. 216).[2][4] The 5200 series has a 15-inch tube and a 125 W, 2.5 A supply; the 5260 has a 14-inch tube and a 240 W, 4.0 A supply. Apple's 5200 manual marks every adjustment page "not for 5260, 5280".[4][2]

The processor-direct slot takes many cards made for the Macintosh LC, but Apple says it is not a true PDS: cards that work with the main processor, such as cache or FPU cards, do not work (p. 11).[2] A Cuda microcontroller handles soft power, resets, PRAM, ADB and the real-time clock; Apple says many system problems clear after pressing the Cuda reset button on the logic board (pp. 21, 178).[2]

The PRAM battery connects to the logic board by a plug and sits on hook-and-loop tape. Apple's test is to replace it below 3.0 V (pp. 174–177); Apple's technical specifications give the battery type as 4.5 V alkaline.[2][1]

Adjustments

[edit | edit source]

Apple's adjustments for the 5260 and 5280 are light meter setup, geometry, video and power supply. Apple requires the power-supply adjustment whenever the analogue board or power supply is taken out: connect a DC voltmeter between the metal chassis and pin 3 of P805 on the power supply, and set R828 for 110 V DC (pp. 213–214).[2] The 5200 series high-voltage adjustment (29.5 V at D713 or D703) does not apply.[4]

The power supply and analogue board carry mains and CRT voltages, and the power-supply adjustment is made with the machine running. Discharge the CRT before working near it; see CRT Discharge Procedure.

Maintenance and repair

[edit | edit source]

Apple's symptom charts for this family are in its Service Source.[2] The 5200 series guides cover the same kind of chassis, but their board part numbers and the high-voltage adjustment do not apply to the 5260:
