Capacitor Failure
The Centris 610 logic board has 10 surface-mount electrolytic capacitors that fail with age.

Symptoms of Cap Failure
* Random crashes or freezes
* Audio distortion or no sound
* Boot failures
* Visible corrosion or residue on the logic board

Solution
Replace all 10 logic board capacitors. See Macintosh Centris 610 Capacitor Replacement Guide.

⚠️ PRAM battery — remove it now
The Centris 610 carries a 3.6 V 1/2AA lithium PRAM battery. These leak and can burst, spraying corrosive electrolyte across the logic board and destroying nearby components — often while the machine simply sits in storage. Remove the PRAM battery from any un-serviced unit. If one has leaked, neutralise and clean the residue and repair corroded traces and vias before troubleshooting.

Boot chime and Sad Mac
Read the start-up sound first: a normal chime with a black screen points to the display path or the monitor, an absent chime or a "chord of death" points to RAM or a core fault, and a Sad Mac shows a numeric code — see Sad Mac Error Codes.

Macintosh Centris 610 (Apple product photograph, 1993)

Symptom-based troubleshooting for the Macintosh Centris 610, which shares its case, power supply and logic board family with the Macintosh Quadra 610. The tables follow Apple's own symptom charts, which list cures in order of likelihood: try the first, check whether the symptom persists, and if a replaced module did not cure it, refit the original before trying the next.[1] Apple's charts work at module level; where the cure is "replace logic board", the component-level causes on a board of this age are usually leaking capacitors or battery damage (see below).

Preliminary checks

[edit | edit source]
 • Mains lead connected and outlet working.
 • Monitor, keyboard and mouse cables seated. The mouse and keyboard use ADB; the monitor uses the DB-15 video port.
 • DRAM and VRAM SIMMs seated.
 • PRAM battery present and reading at least 3.2 V (see Battery).
 • Peripherals and third-party cards removed, which is an early step in several of Apple's charts.[1]

Power and video

[edit | edit source]
Apple's power and video symptom chart[1]
Symptom Apple's cures, in order
Screen completely dark, fan not running, LED not lit Check external power cables; remove peripherals; replace power supply; replace logic board
Screen dark, audio and a drive work, fan running, LED lit Reset PRAM; adjust monitor brightness; check cables; try another monitor; replace video cable; replace VRAM SIMMs; replace logic board
Part or all of the screen bright with sound present, but no picture Reset PRAM; check cables; try another monitor; replace video cable; replace VRAM SIMMs; replace logic board
Screen dark, no audio, drive does not operate, fan running, LED lit Remove peripherals and third-party cards; replace VRAM SIMMs; replace DRAM SIMMs; replace power supply; replace logic board

A NuBus card in the single slot may draw 10 W at most (+12 V 2.1 W, −12 V 1.8 W, +5 V 6.1 W, or 10 W all at +5 V).[2] Remove any card when chasing a power fault.

Power supply

[edit | edit source]

The supply is Apple service part 661-1688, shared with the Centris 660AV;[3] Console5 identifies it as the ASTEC AA16990 (Apple 614-0022) and sells an electrolytic kit for it.[4] Apple publishes no rail tolerances for this machine. Before opening the supply read the mains and stored-charge warning on Macintosh Centris 610 General Maintenance.

Start-up and Sad Mac

[edit | edit source]
 • A normal start-up chime with a dark screen: work through the video rows above.
 • A Sad Mac icon with two lines of hexadecimal code: decode it with Sad Mac Error Codes and the Sad Mac Decoder. The first line's last two digits give the failing test (for example 01 is the ROM checksum, 04 and 05 are RAM tests, 0F is an exception), and the second line identifies the failing bit, address or exception.[5]
 • A flashing question mark: no bootable system was found. Check the hard drive and SCSI chain (below), or boot from a floppy or CD.

Floppy drive

[edit | edit source]
Apple's floppy drive symptom chart[1]
Symptom Apple's cures, in order
Sound and picture present, but the internal floppy drive does not work Replace floppy drive cable; replace floppy drive; replace logic board
Disk ejects and the screen shows a disk icon with a flashing X Try another disk; replace floppy drive cable; replace floppy drive; replace logic board
Disk does not eject Switch off, then hold the mouse button down while switching on; eject the disk manually; replace floppy drive cable; replace floppy drive
Drive tries to eject but the disk does not come out Push the disk fully in; eject manually; replace floppy drive

See Macintosh Floppy Drive Maintenance for head cleaning.

Hard drive, CD-ROM and SCSI

Apple's hard drive, CD-ROM and SCSI charts[1]
Symptom Apple's cures, in order
Internal hard drive runs continuously Replace SCSI data cable; replace hard drive; replace logic board
Internal hard drive does not operate Replace SCSI data cable; replace SCSI power cable; check power to the drive; replace drive; replace logic board
CD-ROM drive does not accept a disc Try another disc; replace the 50-pin ribbon cable; replace CD-ROM mechanism
No CD-ROM icon on the desktop Check the CD-ROM extension is in the System Folder; check the disc is in correctly; replace CD-ROM mechanism; replace power supply; replace SCSI data cable
Works with an internal or an external SCSI device but not both Give each device a different SCSI ID; terminate the hard drive but not the optional CD-ROM; replace the external drive's terminator; replace the external device's SCSI select cable

The drive at the end of the internal SCSI cable must carry terminators and other internal devices must not; the logic board terminates the external end automatically when nothing is attached.[6] The computer is always SCSI device 7, and up to six external devices are supported.[7]

Keyboard and mouse

[edit | edit source]
Apple's peripheral chart[1]
Symptom Apple's cures, in order
Cursor does not move Restart; check the mouse connection; reset PRAM; if the mouse is plugged into the keyboard, plug it into the computer's ADB port, and if it then works replace the keyboard; if it fails in every port replace the mouse; replace logic board
Cursor moves but clicking does nothing Replace mouse; replace logic board
Double-click does not open anything Remove duplicate System files; clear PRAM (Command-Option-P-R at start-up); check the mouse as above; replace logic board
No response to any key Check the keyboard is connected to an ADB port; replace keyboard cable; replace keyboard; replace logic board

All ADB devices together may draw 500 mA at most.[8]

Battery

[edit | edit source]

The clock and PRAM run from a 3.6 V lithium battery.[9] A machine that loses the date and time, or its control panel settings, when unplugged needs a new one. Apple's test is to measure the battery on the 10 V DC range and replace it below 3.2 V.[10] Apple warns that the lithium battery can explode if handled or disposed of improperly.[10] A machine found dead after storage should be checked for battery leakage around the holder before anything else; lithium leakage is cleaned with bicarbonate, not vinegar. See Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.

Logic board capacitors

[edit | edit source]

Recap-a-Mac's annotated photograph marks ten 47 µF 16 V surface-mount electrolytics on the logic board.[11] For the signs of failure see Capacitor Failure Symptoms; for the recap see Macintosh Centris 610 Capacitor Replacement Guide.
