The Power Macintosh 5260 is an all-in-one personal computer introduced by Apple Computer on March 10, 1996. It features a PowerPC 603e processor and a built-in 14" shadow mask color CRT display in a compact all-in-one case. In North America, the Power Macintosh 5260 was sold exclusively to the educational market, while the consumer version was branded as the Performa 5260CD.
The Power Macintosh 5260 is an all-in-one Macintosh with a PowerPC 603e processor and a built-in 14-inch monitor. Apple introduced the 100 MHz Power Macintosh 5260/100 on April 15, 1996 and the 120 MHz 5260/120 on October 1, 1996. EveryMac gives March 10, 1996 and September 19, 1996 as the introduction dates, and says the Power Macintosh 5260 was sold only to education buyers in North America, while the same machine was sold to consumers as the Macintosh Performa 5260CD and Performa 5260/120. Apple's service manual says the Power Macintosh 5260/120 was sold in the United States and Canada, the Performa 5260/120 in Canada and Australia, and the otherwise similar Performa 5280 in Japan.<ref name="ss5260">Apple Computer, Service Source: Power Macintosh/Performa 5260, 5280 Series (1997), :File:Powermac.perf 5260.5280.pdf; see Power Macintosh/Performa 5260, 5280 Series Service Source. == Model Variants ==

The Power Macintosh 5260 was available in two processor configurations:
The 5260 replaced the Power Macintosh 5200 LC and looks the same from outside, but it has its own logic board, power supply, analogue board and a 14-inch tube in place of the 5200's 15-inch one. Apple wrote a separate service manual for it, and the 5200/5300 manual is titled "(not 5260, 5280)" on its cover.<ref name="ss52">Apple Computer, Service Source: Power Macintosh/Performa 5200 and 5300 (not 5260, 5280) (1997), :File:Powermac.perf 5200.5300.pdf; cover (p. 1), Specifications pp. 40 and 47. The processor-direct slot takes many cards made for the Macintosh LC family, but Apple says it is not a true PDS: cards that work with the main processor, such as cache or FPU cards, do not work in it (p. 11). The external video connector is an optional module that mirrors the built-in screen on a second monitor; it cannot drive a separate desktop (pp. 19, 32). EveryMac says a second display can be driven through an LC PDS video card.
EveryMac says that 1 MB of system RAM is dedicated to video. Apple's specification pages and service manual give a separate 1 MB of DRAM on the logic board for the frame buffer.

Service documentation
Where Apple's documents disagree
* Power: the service manual gives 240 W maximum, 4.0 A, and in the same table "220 W maximum for all line and load conditions" (p. 42). Apple's specification pages give 125 W and 4 A.
* Weight: the specification pages give 45 lb. The service manual prints 17 lb without CD-ROM and "19 lb. (21.15 kg)" with it (p. 43); 21.15 kg is about 46.6 lb, close to the specification-page figure.
* Dimensions: the service manual gives 16 in wide and 15.1 in deep (p. 43); the specification pages give 15.1 in wide and 16 in deep.

* A computer that will not start from the keyboard but starts from the rear power switch, or restarts after Shut Down: after checking the keyboard, Apple's cure is a new analogue board (p. 49).
* A rattling noise at startup with the Apple External Video Connector fitted: the external video cable is touching the fan blades and should be pressed or folded out of the way (p. 71).
* Crackling from sounds other than system beeps: if the static changes with the Sound control panel volume, install Audio Volume Extension 1.1 or later; otherwise the logic board (p. 52).
* MPEG card faults: distorted sound needs the modified MPEG board, identified by a jumper from U5 pin 2 to D1 pin 1 (p. 51); video that will not play needs a card whose U12 is marked 341S0205, printed "341SO205" in the manual (p. 54).

is one more reason not to treat these as the same machine.
Apple's adjustments for the 5260 and 5280 are light meter setup, geometry, video and power supply (pp. 184–214). The power-supply adjustment must be done whenever the analogue board or power supply has been taken out: connect a DC voltmeter between the metal chassis and pin 3 of P805 on the power supply, and set R828 for 110 V DC (pp. 213–214). The 5200 and 5300 high-voltage adjustment (29.5 V at D713 or D703) is marked "not for 5260, 5280" and does not apply.

The Power Macintosh 5260 is an all-in-one Macintosh with a PowerPC 603e processor and a built-in 14-inch monitor. Apple introduced the 100 MHz Power Macintosh 5260/100 on April 15, 1996 and the 120 MHz 5260/120 on October 1, 1996.[1][2] EveryMac gives March 10, 1996 and September 19, 1996 as the introduction dates, and says the Power Macintosh 5260 was sold only to education buyers in North America, while the same machine was sold to consumers as the Macintosh Performa 5260CD and Performa 5260/120.[3][4] Apple's service manual says the Power Macintosh 5260/120 was sold in the United States and Canada, the Performa 5260/120 in Canada and Australia, and the otherwise similar Performa 5280 in Japan.[5]

The 5260 replaced the Power Macintosh 5200 LC and looks the same from outside, but it has its own logic board, power supply, analogue board and a 14-inch tube in place of the 5200's 15-inch one. Apple wrote a separate service manual for it, and the 5200/5300 manual is titled "(not 5260, 5280)" on its cover.[5][6]

Sources: service manual pp. 9–11, 19, 28–43, 65, 171, 174–177;[5] processor, bus, cache, RAM grouping and battery type from Apple's specification pages.[1][2]

The processor-direct slot takes many cards made for the Macintosh LC family, but Apple says it is not a true PDS: cards that work with the main processor, such as cache or FPU cards, do not work in it (p. 11).[5] The external video connector is an optional module that mirrors the built-in screen on a second monitor; it cannot drive a separate desktop (pp. 19, 32).[5] EveryMac says a second display can be driven through an LC PDS video card.[3]

EveryMac says that 1 MB of system RAM is dedicated to video. Apple's specification pages and service manual give a separate 1 MB of DRAM on the logic board for the frame buffer.[3][1][5]

Where Apple's documents disagree

[edit | edit source]
 • Power: the service manual gives 240 W maximum, 4.0 A, and in the same table "220 W maximum for all line and load conditions" (p. 42). Apple's specification pages give 125 W and 4 A.[5][1]
 • Weight: the specification pages give 45 lb. The service manual prints 17 lb without CD-ROM and "19 lb. (21.15 kg)" with it (p. 43); 21.15 kg is about 46.6 lb, close to the specification-page figure.[5][2]
 • Dimensions: the service manual gives 16 in wide and 15.1 in deep (p. 43); the specification pages give 15.1 in wide and 16 in deep.[5][1]

Known faults

[edit | edit source]

These come from Apple's symptom charts for the 5260 and 5280.[5]

 • A 5260/100 with the 1.6 GB ATA drive (661-1107) that shows a flashing question mark at startup, sometimes cleared by a restart: Apple says to replace the drive if its serial number is in the range XXX6 0 9 9 XXXXX to XXX6 1 3 1 XXXXX (p. 63).
 • A computer that will not start from the keyboard but starts from the rear power switch, or restarts after Shut Down: after checking the keyboard, Apple's cure is a new analogue board (p. 49).
 • A rattling noise at startup with the Apple External Video Connector fitted: the external video cable is touching the fan blades and should be pressed or folded out of the way (p. 71).
 • Crackling from sounds other than system beeps: if the static changes with the Sound control panel volume, install Audio Volume Extension 1.1 or later; otherwise the logic board (p. 52).
 • MPEG card faults: distorted sound needs the modified MPEG board, identified by a jumper from U5 pin 2 to D1 pin 1 (p. 51); video that will not play needs a card whose U12 is marked 341S0205, printed "341SO205" in the manual (p. 54).

See Power Macintosh 5260 Troubleshooting for the full charts.

Adjustments

[edit | edit source]

Apple's adjustments for the 5260 and 5280 are light meter setup, geometry, video and power supply (pp. 184–214). The power-supply adjustment must be done whenever the analogue board or power supply has been taken out: connect a DC voltmeter between the metal chassis and pin 3 of P805 on the power supply, and set R828 for 110 V DC (pp. 213–214).[5] The 5200 and 5300 high-voltage adjustment (29.5 V at D713 or D703) is marked "not for 5260, 5280" and does not apply.[6]

The power supply and analogue board carry mains and CRT voltages, and the power-supply adjustment is made with the machine running. Discharge the CRT before working near it; see CRT Discharge Procedure.

Service documentation

[edit | edit source]

Apple's Power Macintosh/Performa 5260, 5280 Series Service Source (216 pages) covers the Power Macintosh 5260/100 and 5260/120 and the international Performa 5260/120 and 5280. It is module-level: take-apart, symptom charts, adjustments and an exploded view with part numbers, but no schematics.[5]

Apple's owner's manual, the Power Macintosh User's Manual for Power Macintosh 5260 series computers (1996), covers setup, troubleshooting and reinstalling software, and its Appendix B shows how to open the computer and fit LC-PDS and communication cards, SIMMs and the level-2 cache module (pp. 133–149).[8] Its technical appendix gives a 12 MB minimum and 70 ns SIMMs, which differ from the service manual.[8] Download: Power Macintosh 5260 Series User's Manual.pdf.

Apple's developer note for the machine describes its architecture, I/O and expansion slots for card designers, with mechanical drawings of the I/O expansion cards: Power Macintosh 5260 Computer Developer Note (1996).pdf.[7]
